2005 Women's Soccer

Kennell Ties Mark in Senior Day Victory

Williamsport, Pa. – Lycoming women’s soccer head coach Scott Kennell tied former Lyco mentor Jack Shafer for first place on the Warrior women’s soccer all-time coaching list in a 3-1 victory over Hood College on Saturday afternoon in Williamsport.  The emotion was doubly great as Lycoming jumped back to .500 on the season at 8-8 overall on Senior Day at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

Coach Kennell, in his fourth season with Lycoming women’s soccer, has already accumulated 30 victories in 66 career games.  Two of the seasons in which he has coached could also be considered rebuilding years making the speed to which he has reached this win plateau all the more impressive.

“Players win games,” mentioned Coach Kennell.  “I’ve been fortunate to have coached athletes that want to learn and have done a pretty good job showing it on the field.  Let’s hope that trend continues down the road.”

Lycoming made relatively easy work of the Blazers as they out-shot Hood 28-4.  Freshman Rebekah Shipe (Northumberland, Pa./Northumberland Christian) continued her impressive play with two more goals.  She registered the lone first half goal in the 25th minute off a thru-ball from fellow first year player Dana Steinbruch (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo).

Shipe recorded her second goal in the 53rd minute off a cross from sophomore Danielle Curry (West Chester, Pa./East).  Shipe now has a team-high 12 goals on the season.

Curry is one point closer to all-time career points record of 66 points held by Donna Mongiello.  She now has 61 in less than two full seasons.  Her 15 career assists are now second on the Lycoming’s all-time list and three shy of Jess Forliano’s record of 18.

Freshman defender Samantha Leslie (Etters, Pa./Red Land) gave the Warriors a 3-0 lead in the 69th minute with her first goal of the season after she picked up a rebound off the Blazer keeper.

Hood got on the board with less than two minutes left off a goal from Laura Pitts.

Lycoming is next in action on Tuesday, October 25, against College Misericordia at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.  The 3:00 p.m. start marks the final Warrior home game of the season.
