Warriors Grind Out Second
Straight Victory
Williamsport, Pa. – Coaches
and fans prefer that their teams play well every time they take
the field, no matter how impossible the notion may be. It then
becomes very important to learn how a team will react when it
doesn’t have its best stuff on game day.
Sunday was one of those days
as Lycoming women’s soccer proved its mettle by grinding out a
1-0 victory over Juniata College on a day when the team’s play
could be described as less than stellar. The Warriors improve
to 4-1 on the season with its second consecutive victory while
the Eagles fall to 1-5-1.
For 57 minutes, Lycoming was
unable to crack Juniata’s defense due in part to an inconsistent
attack and an aggressive Eagle back four. But freshman Sarah
Wingerden (Macedon, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) broke through in
the 58th minute. Playing in her first game since the
opening match of the season against Penn College, Wingerden ran
onto a thru-pass from sophomore Danielle Curry (West Chester,
Pa./East), cut inside of the defender, and beat the keeper
to the far post for her first goal of the season.
The pace of the game picked
up from there after, but most of the action was seen in the
midfield with few late chances on either team’s net.
Lycoming is next in action
on Tuesday, September 20, at King’s College. Game time is set
for 4:00 p.m. |
