Lady Warriors Stunned by
Baptist Bible
Williamsport, Pa. – Lycoming
women’s soccer let a lead slip away twice on Thursday afternoon
as the Warriors fell to Baptist Bible College 3-2 in
Williamsport. The loss marks the fourth straight for Lycoming
and evens its season record at 6-6 overall.
With all 11 players packed
behind the ball for the final 15 minutes of play, the Defenders
kept the Warrior attack at bay to hold on for the one goal
victory. Lycoming had a pair of late chances to score, but both
opportunities fell short of the desired result.
Lycoming held a one-goal
advantage twice during the contest beginning with freshman
Rebekah Shipe’s (Northumberland, Pa./Northumberland Christian)
team-leading ninth goal of the season just 8:17 into the game. Shipe
collected a thru-ball from senior Kaitlyn Prairie (Delran,
N.J./Delran), took a couple control touches, and beat BBC
keeper Holly Walton one-on-one to the near side.
Baptist Bible tied the score
in the 19th minute when Heather Scouten sent an
impressive 20-yard strike into the side-netting inside the left
post of Lycoming’s goal. The score remained 1-1 going into the
intermission.
The Warriors regained their
edge in the 55th minute with freshman Stephanie
Shearer’s (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) fourth tally of the
campaign. Shearer collected a touch from Shipe, carried the
ball a couple of strides towards the top of BBC’s penalty box,
and hammered a shot between the sticks into the ride-side
netting.
Lycoming’s edge lasted only
2:21 when Emily Hedges tied it up for BBC. Hedges collected a
partial deflected cross from the near sideline and coolly
redirected it into the net.
The Defenders tacked on the
winning goal in the 63rd minute. Baptist Bible
served a low-cross into Lycoming’s goal area that skipped in
front of the goal-mouth and onto Mindi Hager’s right foot. She
pushed the ball into the net for the match clincher.
Lycoming will try to right
the ship in its next contest on Sunday, October 16, against
Delaware Valley College. The Aggies travel to Williamsport for
a 1:00 p.m. Freedom Conference match up at the Shangraw Athletic
Complex. |
