2005 Women's Soccer

Warriors Win Second Game,
Put Three on All-Tournament Team

Selinsgrove, Pa. – Freshman Katie Gardner (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) scored in the 80th minute to catapult Lycoming College women’s soccer past Alfred University 3-2 on Saturday evening at the Susquehanna Labor Day Classic.  Gardner, part of a scrum in front of Alfred’s goal-mouth, finished a corner kick from senior Kaitlyn Prairie (Delran, N.J./Delran) giving the Warriors a lead they would not relinquish.

The goal marked Prairie’s second assist of the contest.

Lycoming (2-0) was hit hard by the injury bug over the weekend, but does limp home to Williamsport with a pair of strong victories and some hardware in tow.  Sophomore Danielle Curry (West Chester, Pa./East) and freshmen Samantha Leslie (Etters, Pa./Red Land) and Rebekah Shipe (Northumberland, Pa./Northumberland Christian) were named to the All-tournament team following the night’s contest.

Curry opened the scoring against Alfred in the ninth minute of play with her third goal of the tourney.  The reigning Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year connected with Prairie on a through ball and beat the keeper to the right side of the net.  The score remained 1-0 going into halftime.

Alfred came out strong in the second frame with two goals in the first 20 minutes following the intermission, turning the advantage to its favor 2-1.

Shipe leveled the score at 2-2 and collected her tournament hat-trick with an unassisted tally in the 72nd minute.  She galloped through the majority of Alfred’s half of the field leaving defenders in her wake before coolly depositing the ball past the keeper to the near post.

Gardner followed with the game-winner just eight minutes later.

Lycoming travels back to Susquehanna University on Tuesday, September 6 for a regular season match against the Crusaders.  Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
