Warrior Wrestling Falls to
York
Snyder,
Cullen Stay on Winning Trail
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- Senior Tommy Snyder (New Columbia, Pa./Milton)
grabbed another pin and junior Sean Cullen (Cinnaminson,
N.J./Cinnaminson) earned a decision to maintain their
long individual bout winning streaks, but the Lycoming
wrestling team
dropped
its first non-tournament dual match of the season 23-12 to
York College on Tuesday evening. The Spartans, rated 16th
in the nation, improve to 16-6 while the #9 Warriors fall to
11-5-1 in dual meets.
In a
previous meeting t the 2006 Budd Whitehill Wrestling Duals,
Lycoming, the sixth seed in the tournament, upset the
third-seeded Spartans to move on to the semifinal round.
Lycoming went on to place third while York ended the tourney
in the seventh position.
Snyder
picked up his 17th overall victory and 14th
in a row with a 6:14 fall of York’s Sean Griffin at
heavyweight. After stretching out to an 11-2 advantage
midway through the third frame, Snyder got strong position
on his final takedown and turned Griffin for Lycoming’s only
bonus-point victory.
Junior
Sean Cullen (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) stayed hot
in picking up his 12th consecutive victory with a
4-0 decision at 133 pounds over Dave Sterner. His
first round takedown would have been all that he needed, but
a second round escape and riding time added a little more
breathing room.
Senior
Jason Smith (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) used some
solid third round wrestling to earn a come-from-behind
decision over Brian Alwine at 157 pounds. Down 2-1
going into the final frame and starting in the up position,
Smith was able to maneuver Alwine onto his back for two
points and a 3-2 lead. He rode him out for the rest of the
match to win 4-2.
Highlighting York’s seven bout victories was a pin by
Jerry Bowne at 174 pounds over senior Grant Brindle
(Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove). Bowne worked back from an
early 4-1 deficit to take a 7-4 lead before pinning Brindle
in the second period at the 4:13 mark.
The
Spartans’ Duane Bastress, the defending national
champion at 184 pounds, remained undefeated on the season
with a 10-3 decision over senior Derek Crane
(Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown). Bastress is now
31-0 on the season.
Lycoming is
next in action this weekend at the MAC North/South Duals.
The event, held at the University of Scranton, begins at
11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
