Lycoming Drops Gettysburg in Return to Lamade
Warriors Strong Heading into Whitehill Duals

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – After a full month away from the friendly confines of Lamade Gymnasium, Lycoming wrestling turned out a successful homecoming with a 45-6 victory Senior Tommy Snyder, rated 5th in the nation at heavyweight, finishes off his fall victory over Matt Pattanite against Gettysburg.over Gettysburg College on Tuesday evening.  The Warriors improve to 8-3-1 on the season while the Bullets fall to 1-3.

Lycoming recorded a pair of fall victories at the heaviest weight classes courtesy of freshman Bryan Kopesky (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) at 197 pounds and senior Tommy Snyder (New Columbia, Pa./Milton) at heavyweight.  Kopesky jumped out to a 6-3 lead following the first period against James Stevenson, and grabbed two more on a reversal in the second before pinning his opponent at the 4:19 mark.  Snyder, rated fifth in the nation in the 285-pound weight class, didn’t let Mike Pattanite out of the first round.  After picking up four points off a pair of takedowns, Snyder pinned Pattanite with 2:14 gone in the bout.

The Warriors picked up 18 points from the start as Gettysburg forfeited at the 125, 133, and 141-pound weight classes.  The Bullets tried to make up quickly with a pin at 149 pounds by Andrew Goldstein.  Lycoming’s Chris Depietri (Stockholm, N.J./Wallkill Valley Reg.) fell victim to the effort at 2:34 of the first period.

Freshman Bryan Kopesky puts the finishing touches on his pin of Gettysburg's James Stevenson.Warrior freshman Al Wonesh (Columbus, N.J./North Burlington) quickly regained control for the Warriors with a 10-1 major decision victory over Caleb Seufert at 157 pounds.  Wonesh stormed out in the first frame grabbing six points thanks to a takedown, near fall, and a caution.  He managed four more points on takedowns in the third period, surrendering only one escape, and carried the advantage through the final stanza to increase Lycoming’s lead to 22-6.

Senior Heath Oberlin (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) kept the Warriors’ train rolling with a 9-1 major decision win at 165 pounds over Joshua Kaplan.  Oberlin picked up only two points in the first period, but jumped out with five in the second before finishing the bout with a takedown in the third frame.

Senior Derek Crane sizes up his opponent in his bout during Lycoming's 45-6 victory over Gettysburg.Senior captain Derek Crane (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) made it a trio of consecutive majors for the Warriors with an 11-3 decision over Aaron Fuchs at 174 pounds for his ninth overall victory of the season.  Crane moved out early with five points in the first period, but was outscored 2-1 in the second.  Looking to get into a bonus situation, Crane stepped up with another five-point effort in the third to secure the extra team point.

Junior Tom Daub (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita) found himself in a dogfight with Johnny Leinberger at 184 pounds.  After the pair went scoreless in the first period, Daub carried only a 1-0 lead into the third after escaping the beginning down position.  Following a good 30-second battle for control in the waning moments of the period, Daub earned the upper hand with only six ticks left in the final frame for the bout’s only takedown and a 3-0 decision.

Next on the docket for Lycoming is the annual Budd Whitehill National Duals.  For the 12th consecutive year, the Whitehill Duals will call Lamade home this Friday and Saturday.  The 20-team affair features 11 of the top 22 squads in NCAA Division III including the 12th rated Warriors.  The meet, broken into a dozen separate rounds with four bouts per round in most, is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, January 13.  For more information on the Duals, visit Whitehill Central on Lycoming’s wrestling website at www.lycoming.edu/sports/wrestling/main.htm.
