Warriors Fifth at Scranton Invitational
SCRANTON, Pa. – Lycoming wrestling competed at the University of
Scranton Invitational on Sunday afternoon, finishing fifth
in the nine team open event. Lycoming only wrestled in
eight of the 10 weight classes, not entering a Warrior in
the 141 and 174-pound weight classes.
Sophomore
Matt Miller (Muncy, Pa./Montgomery) led the Warriors
with a second place finish at 184 pounds. He pinned Buck
Raymond of King’s College in his first bout and then
moved on with a default victory in his next match before
bowing out in the championship bout.
Freshman
Al Wonesh (Columbus, N.J./North Burlington) took third
place at 157 pounds. He earned a 1-0 decision over the
College of New Jersey’s Ryan McCabe, but then fell
5-3 to Rob Bozart from Elizabethtown College. He
regrouped in prime fashion with an 11-1 major decision over
Chris Steffa from Steven’s Tech. He finished his run
his with a 3-1 decision for a second victory over McCabe.
Junior
Nick Mascellino (Hopatcong, N.J./Hopatcong) also
performed well for the Warriors with a fourth position
showing at 125 pounds. He earned a 10-0 major decision over
Washington & Lee’s Tom Hosford. Steve Colasuonno
from McDaniel College got the best of Mascellino in his next
bout 8-4, but he righted the ship with a 5-1 decision over
Pete Achilles from Etown. Mascellino lost the third
place bout 3-1 to Scranton’s Rick Russell to finish
out his afternoon.
Also
wrestling for the Warriors were freshmen James Saxton
(Cinnaminson, Pa./Cinnaminson) and Travis
Fenstermacher (Muncy, Pa./Hughesville) at 125 and 133
pounds, respectively. Freshman Eddie Brown (Rutherford,
N.J./Rutherford) and junior Kent Hayden (Wyomissing,
Pa./Wilson) both competed at 149 pounds while freshman
Chris Merwine (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pen Argyl) and junior
Tom Daub (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita) toed the line at
165 and 184 pounds, sequentially. At 197 pounds, freshmen
Brian Gable (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast Catholic)
and Bryan Kopesky (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg)
and senior Justin Hoffacker (New Oxford, Pa./Bermudian
Springs) took the mats, and junior Joe Ostrowski
(Wilkes-Barre, Pa./E.L. Myers) competed at 285 pounds.
Lycoming is
next in action on Monday, December 5, as the nationally 12th
ranked Warriors travel to #18 Ithaca College for a dual
match against the Bombers. The meet is scheduled to begin
at 7:00 p.m. in Ben Light Gymnasium.
