WARRIOR WRESTLING COMES UP SHORT AT DELAWARE VALLEY

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Lycoming College wrestling team traveled to Delaware Valley College, Saturday afternoon, for a Middle Atlantic Conference dual match. The Warriors, ranked 19th in the nation, were even with the ninth-ranked Aggies through six bouts, but three consecutive wins by the home team allowed Delaware Valley to pull away for the 23-15 victory. Lycoming falls to 10-6 overall and 1-1 within the conference, while the Aggies improve to 10-5 and 2-0.

Sean Cullen (Fr./Cinnaminson, N.J.; Cinnaminson) got things started for the Warriors at 125 pounds, with a 5-0 decision over Mike Handelman. Delaware Valley, however, won the next three bouts with a pin and two decisions to open up a 12-3 lead.

Jason Smith (Fr./Hughesville, Pa.; Hughesville) responded for Lycoming with a first-period pin of Mike Berlanda at 157 pounds. Clint Swartz (Sr./Milton, Pa.; Warrior Run) followed at 165 pounds with a 6-4 decision over Aaron Harris to pull the Warriors even at 12-12.

The Aggies then sent three nationally-ranked wrestlers to the mat and came away with three consecutive victories at 174, 184, and 197 pounds. A technical foul and two decisions gave Delaware Valley a 23-12 lead with just one bout remaining.

At heavyweight, Tommy Snyder (So./New Columbia, Pa.; Milton) picked up a 4-1 decision over Forest Smith to make the final team score 23-15 in favor of the Aggies.

Lycoming will be in action again on Saturday, January 31, when they host the Middle Atlantic Conference North-South Duals.
