WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lycoming
College wrestling team hosted Shippensburg University, Friday
evening, for their first dual match of the season. The Warriors lost
a pair of overtime matches that resulted in a 12-point swing and a
24-12 victory for the visiting Raiders.
The match got
off to a fast start at 125 pounds. The Warriors’ Nick Mascellino
(So./Hopatcong, N.J.; Hopatcong) opened with a takedown but
Jamie Thomas (Fr./Mechanicsburg, Pa.; Cumberland Valley) quickly
reversed him and eventually recorded the pin just 1:27 into the
match.
Lycoming got
three points back with a 5-2 decision at 133 pounds. Sean Cullen
(So./Cinnaminson, N.J.; Cinnaminson) used a first period
reversal and a second period escape to gain a 3-2 lead. Riding time
plus an unnecessary roughness penalty point on the Raiders’ Sonny
Phillip (So./Boothwyn, Pa.; Chichester) gave Cullen the 5-2
victory.
At 141 pounds,
Shippensburg extended their lead with a 12-2 major decision by
Alex Renn (So./Sunbury, Pa.; Shikellamy) over Eric Snyder
(Sr./Milton, Pa.; Milton). A pair of takedowns and a three-point
near-fall in the first period set the tone for the bout.
Zach Leathers
(Jr./Kennett Square, Pa.; Unionville)
got the Raiders three more points at 149 pounds, with an overtime
decision over Sean Reese (Sr./Milton, Pa.; Milton). Reese
held a 3-0 lead entering the third period, but Leathers scored a
reversal and a riding time point to force overtime. Leathers then
recorded a takedown and two back points in the extra period for the
win.
Andy Martin
(Jr./Manheim, Pa.; Manheim Central)
made it three in a row for
Shippensburg with a 17-3 major decision at 157 pounds.
Eric Miller
(So./Muncy, Pa.; Montgomery)
got the Warriors back on the board with a 5-2 decision at 165
pounds. Miller overcame a first-period takedown by Mark Murphy
(Fr./Dillsburg, Pa.; Northern York) to tally a pair of escapes
and a takedown for a 4-2 lead entering the final period. An
additional point for riding time resulted in the three-point
victory.
Lycoming dropped
their second overtime bout at 174 pounds. Both wrestlers scored an
escape in regulation and failed to score in the first minute of
overtime. Derek Crane (Sr./Elizabethtown, Pa.; Elizabethtown)
scored another escape for the Warriors to take a 2-1 lead, but the
Raiders’ Kyle Skinner recorded a reversal in the final 30
seconds to claim the 3-2 decision.
Freshman
Matt Miller (Muncy, Pa.;
Montgomery) kept
Lycoming’s hopes alive with a 3-1 decision at 184 pounds. With the
score tied 1-1 in the third period, Miller scored a takedown with 34
seconds remaining to record the victory.
Shippensburg
clinched the team victory at 197 as
Cory Jacoby (So./Hanover, Pa.; Delone
Catholic) notched a 10-2
major decision over Kevin
Colton Craig (Sr./Flanders, N.J.; West Morris Mendham).
Jacoby recorded four takedowns in the bout.
Tommy Snyder
(Jr./New Columbia, Pa.; Milton)
closed out the match for the Warriors with a 5-3 decision over
Jared Dubbs
(Jr./Dallastown, Pa.; Dallastown)
at heavyweight.
Lycoming’s next
action will come at the Olivet Duals in Michigan on November 20.
