WILLIAMSPORT, Pa,. –
Wisconsin-LaCrosse picked up right where they left off for the
second day of competition in the 2004 Budd Whitehill Division
III Duals hosted by Lycoming College. The Eagles won two more
matches to go a perfect 5-0 for the tournament and claim their
fourth Whitehill Duals championship. Ithaca College finished
second and the College of New Jersey came in third. The host
Warriors placed sixth.
Wisc.-LaCrosse
defeated Ithaca College in the finals 25-16. Adam Kuchnia and
Troy Fabry recorded back-to-back major decisions at 141 and 149
pounds to give the Eagles a 14-0 lead after the first four bouts
of the match. Jason Lulloff added a major decision at 184 pounds
and Ryan Allen secured the victory with another major decision
at heavyweight. Wisc.-LaCrosse advanced to the finals by
defeating Norwich University, 25-16, in the semifinals.
Ithaca made it
to the championship match by upsetting number-one seed College
of New Jersey, 18-13, in the semis. Six different wrestlers won
by decision for the Bombers, including three by a single point.
In the finals, Nick Caladrino tallied a pin at 197 pounds and
Marc Israel won by major decision at 165 pounds.
After the
College of New Jersey fell to Ithaca in the semifinals, they
rebounded to top Norwich, 32-10, in the consolation match. The
victory was sparked by back-to-back technical falls by Sean
Flynn and Paul Vaccaro at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively.
Carlos Panfilli capped the win with a pin at heavyweight.
Lycoming went
2-1 in Saturday’s action defeating Thiel College, 39-4, and
Messiah College, 33-6, before falling to Springfield College,
21-20, in the fifth-place match. Three Warriors were perfect on
the day. Jason Smith (Fr./Hughesville, Pa.; Hughesville) went 3-0 with a
win-by-technical-fall, a decision, and a win-by-forfeit at 157
pounds. John Battaglia
(Sr./Beaver Falls, Pa.; Blackhawk) was 3-0 with two
decisions and a win-by-forfeit at 197 pounds. And at
heavyweight, Tommy Snyder
(So./New Columbia, Pa.; Milton) recorded two pins and
accepted a forfeit to go 3-0 on the day. Lycoming was 3-2 in
five matches over the weekend and is now 9-4 overall this
season.
