LYCOMING’S
WALDRON ADVANCES TO SEMIFINALS AT NATIONAL WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
ADA,
Ohio – Lycoming
College sophomore Mike Waldron (Williamsport, PA; Loyalsock)
turned in a solid performance during the first day of competition
at the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Championships, Friday
afternoon and evening. Waldron, the top seed at 133 pounds, won
all three of his matches to advance to the semifinals of the
championship bracket.
Waldron
opened the competition with a 5-2 decision over Kevin DeJuliis of
Washington & Jefferson College. He then followed with a 10-4
decision over Tenkoran Agyeman of SUNY-Oswego. In the
quarterfinals, Waldron seemed to hit his stride recording a
third-period pin of Zach Chambers from Wisconsin-Platteville to
earn a trip to the semifinals. The victory also assures Waldron of
All-America honors for the second consecutive season. Last year he
placed fourth at 133 pounds.
Waldron’s
semifinal opponent will be the number five seed Dave Illaria from
the College of New Jersey. Illaria advanced to the semis by
recording two major decisions and a regular decision.
Senior
Jeff Tierney (Blairsville, NJ; North Warren Regional), the
Warriors’ second national qualifier, did not fare as well in the
184-pound bracket. Tierney dropped his first match to Jeff
Edelstein of Ithaca College by a score of 13-4. He then fell in
the consolation bracket by a score of 11-5 to David Hirt of
Wheaton College.
