LYCOMING GRAPPLERS DETHRONE MONARCHS

WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The Lycoming College wrestling team hosted Middle Atlantic Conference rival King’s College, Friday evening. The Warriors piled up the bonus points to defeat the Monarchs 25-18, despite each team winning five bouts. Lycoming improves to 10-4 overall while King’s falls to 8-6.

Mitch Marcks (Jr./Allentown, PA; Dieruff) got the Monarchs on the board first with an 8-2 decision at 125 pounds. Mike Waldron (So./Williamsport, PA; Loyalsock) responded for the Warriors at 133, however, by pinning his opponent at 1:27 of the first period.

After King’s got a decision from Jim Morgan (Jr./Scranton, PA; West Scranton) at 141 to tie the match at 6-6, Sean Reese (So./Milton, PA; Milton) recorded another pin at 149 to put Lycoming ahead 12-6. The Monarchs then answered right back with a pin by Dave Shafer (Sr./Nuremberg, PA; Hazleton) that knotted the score at 12-12.

King’s regained the lead following the 165 bout when Joe Arnone (So./Honesdale, PA; Honesdale) won a tight 2-1 decision in overtime. This time the Warriors answered. Matt Bruce (Jr./Guys Mills, PA; Maplewood) tied the match at 15 with a 9-4 decision at 174. Jeff Tierney (Sr./Blairsville, NJ; North Warren Regional) then backed the Monarchs into a corner with a win by fall at 184 that gave Lycoming a 21-15 lead with just two bouts remaining.

Matt Gingo (Sr./Dallas, PA; Dallas) kept King’s hopes alive with a 4-3 decision at 197, but Tommy Snyder (Fr./Milton, PA; Milton) secured the victory for the Warriors with a 10-2 major decision at heavyweight.

Lycoming will be in action again on Saturday, February 1, when they play host to the MAC North/South Duals.
