WRESTLING FINISHES SECOND AT SCRANTON TOURNAMENT
WILLIAMSPORT, PA The Lycoming
College wrestling team placed second in a tournament held at the
University of Scranton, Sunday afternoon. The Warriors compiled
134 points to finish behind only Kings College in the six-team
field. Lycoming claimed two individual champions and a total of
ten placewinners at the event.
Jeff Tierney (Sr./Blairstown,
NJ; North Warren Regional) and John Battaglia (So./Beaver
Falls, PA; Blackhawk) led the Warrior contingent by winning
the 184 and 197 pound weight classes respectively. After receiving
a bye, Tierney pinned his first opponent and then recorded a 6-0
decision in the title match. Battaglia also needed just two wins
to claim his weight class. He won by decision in both bouts by
scores of 7-0 and 1-0.
Runners-up for the Lycoming
included: Dan Winter (Sr./Langhorne, PA; Neshominy) at 165
pounds; Justin Hoffacker (So./New Oxford, PA; Bermudian
Springs) at 197 pounds; and Joe Ostrowski
(Fr./Wilkes-Barre, PA; E.L. Meyers) at heavyweight.
Five other Warriors placed third in
their respective weight classes: Jared Weller (So./Philipsburg,
PA; Philipsburg-Osceola) 125; John Ambs (So./Mount Joy,
PA; Donegal) 141; Jon Carlson (So./Emporium, PA;
Cameron County) 149; Tim Cherry (Jr./Furlong, PA;
Central Bucks West) 174; and Chad Decker
(Fr./Marysville, PA; Susquenita) heavyweight.
Lycoming will compete again on
Saturday, December 14, when they travel to Johnson & Wales
University for dual meets against their host as well as American
International.
