TRIO
OF WARRIORS SET TO COMPETE AT NCAA DIVISION III NATIONAL WRESTLING
CHAMPIONSHIPS
WILLIAMSPORT,
PA – Lycoming College will send three wrestlers to the NCAA
Division III National Championships being held in Wilkes-Barre
this weekend. Mike Waldron (So./Williamsport, PA; Loyalsock)
will compete at 133 pounds, Andy Squires (Fr./Clearfield, PA;
Clearfield) will wrestle at 141 pounds, and Jon Neve
(Jr./Norristown, PA; Germantown Academy) will compete at 197
pounds. All three qualified for the national tournament by winning
the Middle Atlantic Conference championship at their respective
weights.
Waldron
enters the two-day tournament as the number three seed with a
record of 34-1. Since transferring to Lycoming this season,
Waldron has been tearing up the competition. His lone loss came in
the championship bout at the Ithaca tournament on Nov. 10, 2001.
He has since reeled off 30 consecutive victories, including 15
pins. Throughout the regular season, Waldron wrestled against five
other national qualifiers defeating them all.
Squires
and Neve each enter the tournament as unseeded competitors at
their weights. Squires went 21-8 during his freshman campaign and
has really come on late in the season. He has won nine consecutive
matches and 14 of his last 17 dating back to Jan. 11 of this year.
Neve joined the team in mid-season after some time off following
football season. He has since tallied a record of 14-5, including
wins in nine of his last 10 bouts. Eight of his victories this
season have come by pins.
Wrestling
begins tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. following the opening
