WRESTLING DEFEATS DELAWARE VALLEY IN DECISIVE FASHION
WILLIAMSPORT,
PA – The Lycoming College wrestling team hosted Delaware
Valley College, Friday evening, in what is traditionally one of
the fiercest rivalry matches on the schedule. This year,
however, the Warriors got on a roll and never looked back
defeating the Aggies 31-9. Lycoming improves to 14-4 overall on
the season while Delaware Valley falls to 4-4.
Jeremy
Adams (So./Clearfield, PA; Clearfield)
got things started for the Warriors at 157 pounds with a 10-3
decision over Joe Jones. Delaware Valley came right back with a
decision at 165 to tie score when Jason Shivak defeated Grant
Brindle (Fr./Pine Grove, PA; Pine Grove) 11-5. The Aggies
then appeared to grab all the momentum when Josh Housekeeper
pinned defending MAC champion Andy Hull (So./Mill Hall, PA;
Bald Eagle Nittany) at 174 to give his team a 9-3 advantage.
The true
momentum shift, however, came at 184 pounds where Jeff
Tierney (Jr./Blairstown, NJ; North Warren Regional) handed
Andy Povenski his first loss of the season in a 9-6 decision.
Povenski had entered the match ranked second in the nation at
184 pounds and as the defending MAC champion at that weight.
“Tierney’s
win was huge for us,” said Lycoming Head Coach Roger Crebs.
“After the pin at 174 we sort of had the wind knocked out of
us, but Tierney’s effort put us right back in the match.”
The Warriors
took advantage of the stunning upset by recording pins at the
next two weight classes to take an 18-9 lead. Jon Neve
(Jr./Norristown, PA; Germantown Academy) got the fall at
197, pinning Mika Miller 1:37 into the second period. Wes
Keen (So./Avis, PA; Jersey Shore) followed with a second
period pin of Jamie Kleinle in the heavyweight bout.
Lycoming
closed the door on Delaware Valley by winning all four of the
lightweight bouts. T.J. Hunsberger (Fr./Moon Township, PA;
Moon) recorded a 10-3 decision over Mike Weston at 125. Mike
Waldron (So./Williamsport, PA; Loyalsock) added another
decision at 133 with a 13-8 win over B.J. Wise. At 141 Andy
Squires (Fr./Clearfield, PA; Clearfield) topped Bobby Feiger
5-3, and Corey Mowery (Fr./Montgomery, PA; Montgomery)
closed out the match with an 8-1 decision over Jeremy Messinger
at 149.
“We
wrestled phenomenally tonight,” said Crebs. “After the trip
to Ohio where we couldn’t win any of the close bouts, we come
home and not only win the close ones but pick up bonus points in
the other bouts. I didn’t expect us to win by this wide of a
margin, but all our guys just wrestled great. It’s a great win
for us and it was nice to get it at home after being away for
awhile.”
