WRESTLING DROPS OPENER TO DIVISION II SHIPPENSBURG
WILLIAMSPORT,
PA – The Lycoming College wrestling team opened up their
season, Wednesday evening, hosting Division II Shippensburg
University for a dual match. The Warriors and Raiders each won
five bouts, but Shippensburg scored more bonus points to claim
the victory by a 21-18 score.
Lycoming opened
the match with a pair of decisions at 165 and 174 pounds to pull
out to a 6-0 lead. Derek Crane (So./Elizabethtown, PA;
Elizabethtown) won by a score of 5-3 at 165, and Matt
Bruce (Jr./Guys Mills, PA; Maplewood) won 11-5 at 174.
The Raiders
came back in a big way, however, picking up 11 points in the
next two weight classes. Corey Jacoby (Fr./Hanover, PA;
DeLone Catholic) got Shippensburg on the board with a win by
fall in 4:24 at 184 pounds. Jared Dubbs (So./Dallastown, PA;
Dallastown) followed with a technical fall at 197.
At heavyweight,
Al Fluman (So./Gettysburg, PA; Gettysburg) pulled the
Warriors within two with a 5-3 decision. T.J. Hunsberger
(So./Moon Township, PA; Moon) then gave Lycoming a 12-11
lead with an 11-9 decision at 125.
The Raiders
again answered by winning the next two bouts to regain an 18-12
advantage. Sonny Phillip (Fr./Boothwyn, PA; Chichester)
tallied a 12-6 decision at 133 and Zack Leather (So./Kennett
Square, PA; Unionville) recorded an 18-4 major decision.
Sean Reese
(So./Milton, PA; Milton)
then pulled the Warriors even in dramatic fashion with a first
period pin of his opponent at 149 pounds.
With the score
knotted at 18-18, the entire match came down to 157 pounds.
Shippensburg’s Andy Martin (So./Manheim, PA; Manheim
Central) won a hard-fought 3-1 decision to give the Raiders
a 21-18 victory.
The Lycoming
wrestlers will be in action again on Saturday when they travel
to a tournament at Ursinus College.
