WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The Lycoming College wrestling team opened up their season, Wednesday evening, hosting Division II Shippensburg University for a dual match. The Warriors and Raiders each won five bouts, but Shippensburg scored more bonus points to claim the victory by a 21-18 score.

Lycoming opened the match with a pair of decisions at 165 and 174 pounds to pull out to a 6-0 lead. Derek Crane (So./Elizabethtown, PA; Elizabethtown) won by a score of 5-3 at 165, and Matt Bruce (Jr./Guys Mills, PA; Maplewood) won 11-5 at 174.

The Raiders came back in a big way, however, picking up 11 points in the next two weight classes. Corey Jacoby (Fr./Hanover, PA; DeLone Catholic) got Shippensburg on the board with a win by fall in 4:24 at 184 pounds. Jared Dubbs (So./Dallastown, PA; Dallastown) followed with a technical fall at 197.

At heavyweight, Al Fluman (So./Gettysburg, PA; Gettysburg) pulled the Warriors within two with a 5-3 decision. T.J. Hunsberger (So./Moon Township, PA; Moon) then gave Lycoming a 12-11 lead with an 11-9 decision at 125.

The Raiders again answered by winning the next two bouts to regain an 18-12 advantage. Sonny Phillip (Fr./Boothwyn, PA; Chichester) tallied a 12-6 decision at 133 and Zack Leather (So./Kennett Square, PA; Unionville) recorded an 18-4 major decision.

Sean Reese (So./Milton, PA; Milton) then pulled the Warriors even in dramatic fashion with a first period pin of his opponent at 149 pounds.

With the score knotted at 18-18, the entire match came down to 157 pounds. Shippensburg’s Andy Martin (So./Manheim, PA; Manheim Central) won a hard-fought 3-1 decision to give the Raiders a 21-18 victory.
