MIXED
RESULTS FOR LYCOMING AFTER FIRST DAY OF NCAA WRESTLING
CHAMPIONSHIPS
WILKES-BARRE,
PA – Lycoming College’s contingent of wrestlers suffered mixed
results during the opening day of competition at the NCAA Division
III National Championships, Friday.
Mike
Waldron (So./Williamsport, PA; Loyalsock)
entered the championships as the number three seed at 133 pounds.
The high seeding earned him a first round bye and in the second
round, Waldron needed just 25 seconds to pin Chuck Griffith of St.
John’s College. In the quarterfinals, however, Waldron got
caught by Tom Hall of Ithaca just seconds before the end of bout
and was pinned, sending him to the consolation bracket. In his
first wrestle-back bout Waldron pinned top seed John Marchette of
Augsburg, who had also been upset in the championship bracket.
At
141 pounds, freshman Andy Squires (Clearfield, PA; Clearfield)
drew a tough first bout in third seeded Wil Kelly of Wartburg.
Squires hung in there but eventually fell by a 5-2 decision.
Squires rebounded to defeat Jim Russial of York College in the
first round of consolations, 4-2. However, Squires was eliminated
from the tournament when he dropped his next bout to number five
seed Keith Poloskey of Springfield.
Jon
Neve (Jr./Norristown, PA; Germantown Academy)
drew an even tougher first opponent at 197 pounds in the weight
classes’ top seed, Kevin Rasmussen of defending champion
Augsburg College. Rasmussen recorded a major decision over Neve by
a score of 11-3. Neve, however, rebounded to top Justin Post of
Loras College, 10-3, in the first round of consolations. He had
another consolation match scheduled for Friday evening but results
were not available at the time of this release.
Wrestling
resumes tomorrow morning at 11 a.m.
