ADVANCES NINE WRESTLERS TO SEMIFINALS AT MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
GRANTHAM PA –
The Lycoming College wrestling team had a successful first day of
competition at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships being
held at Messiah College today and tomorrow. The Warriors advanced
nine of ten wrestlers to the semifinal round that will begin at 10
a.m. Saturday.
T.J.
Hunsberger (Fr./Moon Township, PA; Moon)
advanced as the third seed at 125 pounds with an 11-4 decision
over Jeremy Mayer of Wilkes University.
Mike Waldron
(So./Williamsport, PA; Loyalsock)
entered the tournament as the top seed at 133 pounds and advanced
to the semifinals after receiving a bye.
At 141 pounds, Andy
Squires (Fr./Clearfield, PA; Clearfield) was the top seed and
advanced after pinning Brian Issac of Elizabethtown in 1:43.
Corey Mowery
(Fr./Montgomery, PA; Montgomery)
recorded a 10-1 major decision over Jed Starner of Wilkes to
advance to the semis. Mowery is the third seed at 149 pounds.
Jeremy Adams
(So./Clearfield, PA; Clearfield)
defended his number two seeding with a pin of Dave Bundus of
Messiah at 2:26 of the opening period.
Derek Crane
(Fr./Elizabethtown, PA; Notre Dame)
won an 8-3 decision over Brian McElrone of Albright at 165 as the
fourth seed.
Defending MAC
champion Andy Hull (So./Mill Hall, PA; Bald Eagle Nittany)
won his opening bout with a 3-1 decision over Tim Pentz of Messiah
at 174 pounds.
At 184 pounds,
third seed Jeff Tierney (Jr./Blairsville, NJ; North Warren
Regional) pinned Ron Saglimbene of Scranton in the second
period.
Jon Neve
(Jr./Norristown, PA; Germantown Academy)
became the last Warriors to advance, pinning Michael Kelly of
Scranton in 1:29 at 197 pounds.
Al Fluman
(Fr./Gettysburg, PA; Gettysburg)
wrestled at heavyweight for Lycoming but drew the number one seed,
Cory Fleisher of Wilkes, as his quarterfinal opponent. Fluman fell
by a 16-2 major decision. He will wrestle back through
consolations tomorrow.
As a team the
Warriors are tied for second place with Delaware Valley with 17
points after the first day of wrestling. Both teams trail
first-place Wilkes by two points. King’s College, the favorite
entering the tournament is in fourth place with 11 points.
Lycoming and King’s are the only two schools to advance nine
wrestlers to the semifinal round.
The
semifinals will begin at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning with the finals
scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
