WRESTLING PLACES THIRD AT BUDD WHITEHILL DUALS
WILLIAMSPORT,
PA – The Lycoming College wrestling team entered the 2002 Budd
Whitehill Duals tabbed as the sixth best team, they exit the duals
as the third best team. The Warriors stumbled in their semifinal
match versus the University of Chicago, falling 27-9, but
rebounded to defeat top-seed The College of New Jersey, 19-17, in
the third-place match. Lycoming now has an 11-2 record in dual
matches this season.
In the
semifinal match-up with Chicago, the Warriors won just three bouts
– all by decision. Mike Waldron (So./Williamsport, PA;
Loyalsock) got things started at 133 pounds with an 8-1 win. Derek
Crane (Fr./Elizabethtown, PA; Notre Dame) picked up another
decision at 165 pounds by a score of 8-7. Andy Hull (So./Mill
Hall, PA; Bald Eagle Nittany) added the final victory at 174
pounds by a 9-4 tally.
Waldron again
got things started for Lycoming versus TCNJ by pinning his
opponent in just 1:53. Andy Squires (Fr./Clearfield, PA:
Clearfield) followed with a major decision at 141 pounds. And Corey
Mowery (Fr./Montgomery, PA; Montgomery) tacked on a decision
at 149 to give the Warriors a 13-3 advantage. After dropping two
bouts, Hull got the team back on the scoreboard with a 5-2
decision at 174 pounds. Jeff Tierney (Jr./Blairstown, NJ; North
Warren Regional) stretched Lycoming’s lead to 19-11 with a
12-5 win at 184 pounds. TCNJ won the final two bouts but could not
overtake the Warriors who won 19-17.
In the
championship match, King’s College defeated the University of
Chicago 25-7. The Monarchs won 8-of-10 bouts to secure the
championship. Loras College defeated John Carroll University for
fifth place, and Ohio Northern University topped Oswego State for
seventh place.
