WARRIOR GRAPPLERS ADVANCE TO SEMIFINALS OF BUDD WHITEHILL DUALS

WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The Lycoming College wrestling team won a pair of matches during the opening day of the Budd Whitehill Division III Duals to advance to the semifinal round of the tournament. The Warriors topped Johnson & Wales University in the opening round, 29-13, and then upset third-seed Ohio Northern University, 27-14, in the quarterfinals. Lycoming will take on the University of Chicago, tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m.

Versus Johnson & Wales, the Warriors won six consecutive weights after dropping the 125 bout to build a 25-3 advantage. Mike Waldron (So./Williamsport, PA; Loyalsock) opened the scoring with an 11-3 major decision at 133. Andy Squires (Fr./Clearfield, PA; Clearfield) followed with a pin at 141. Corey Mowery (Fr./Montgomery, PA; Montgomery) accepted a forfeit at 149 and Jeremy Adams (So./Clearfield, PA; Clearfield), Derek Crane (Fr./Elizabethtown, PA; Notre Dame), and Nate Jones (Jr./Houtzdale, PA; Moshannon Valley) each added decision at 157, 165, and 174, respectively. Jon Neve (Jr./Norristown, PA; Germantown Academy) wrapped up the scoring for Lycoming with a major decision at 197.

Against Ohio Northern, the Warriors jumped out to an early lead, winning the first five bouts. T.J. Hunsberger (Fr./Moon Township, PA; Moon) accepted a forfeit at 125. Waldron followed with a first-round pin. Squires, Mowery, and Adams held the momentum with decisions at 141, 149, and 157. Andy Hull (So./Mill Hall, PA; Bald Eagle Nittany) added a win by fall at 174 to push Lycoming’s total to 27.

The other semifinal match will feature top-seed The College of New Jersey versus fifth-seed King’s College. TCNJ defeated Elizabethtown, Muskingum, and Oswego to advance to the semis. King’s topped Augustana and upset fourth-seed John Carroll to reach the semifinals.

TCNJ and King’s will wrestle at 10:30 a.m., along with Lycoming and Chicago. The two winners will meet in the tournament championship at 3 p.m. The losers of the semifinal matches will meet for third place, also at 3 p.m.
