WARRIOR
WRESTLING SPLITS SQUAD;
COMPETES AT NORWICH AND SCRANTON
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.
The Lycoming College wrestling team split into two squads this
weekend to compete in a triangular dual match at Norwich
University in Vermont and the University of Scranton Invitational.
The varsity grapplers went 2-0 at Norwich, defeating the host team
37-3 and Bridgewater State, 28-18. The junior varsity wrestlers
placed second out of 11 teams at Scranton.
In Vermont, Derek
Crane (Fr./Elizabethtown, PA; Notre Dame), Andy Hull
(So./Mill Hall, PA; Bald Eagle Nittany), Jeff Tierney
(Jr./Blairstown, NJ; North Warren Regional), and Mike
Waldron (So./Williamsport, PA; Williamsport) each picked up a
pair of dual match victories. Crane, wrestling at 165 pounds,
defeated Josh Jensen of Norwich 7-2 and Andy Cook of Bridgewater
10-3. At 174 pounds, Hull topped Jared Powell of Norwich 7-3, and
Brian Bartlett of Bridgewater 3-2. Jeff Tierney scored wins over
Silver Oghayore of Norwich (6-0), and Ben Therriew of Bridgewater
(10-2) at 184 pounds. Waldron pinned his 133-pound opponent from
Norwich in just 48 seconds. He won by injury default versus
Bridgewater.
Corey Mowrey
(Fr./Montgomery, PA; Montgomery)
and Dan Winter (Jr./Langhorne, PA; Neshaminy) competed at
149 and 157 pounds respectively. The duo each picked up wins
versus Norwich and accepted forfeits versus Bridgewater.
We wrestled
well, said Lycoming Head Coach Roger Crebs. It was good to
get back on the mats and get two wins on the road like this,
especially heading into conference action next week.
At Scranton, the
Warriors claimed two first-place finishers. Nate Niman
(Sr./Newport, PA; Newport) went a perfect 3-0 at 133 pounds to
win his weight class and Jeff Betz (Jr./Muncy, PA; Wyoming
Seminary) went 4-0 at 141 pounds to claim his championship.
Betz capped his run by pinning his opponent in the final bout.
At 157 pounds,
Lycoming picked up two more place winners. Todd Puderbach (So./Unityville,
PA; Hughesville) won two matches before dropping a 1-0
decision in the championship bout to finish in second. Clinton
Swartz (Fr./Milton, PA; Milton) went 2-2 to place fourth. His
losses came versus the eventual champion and third place finisher.
Jeremy Adams
(So./Clearfield, PA; Clearfield)
was the final Warrior to place. He went 4-1 at 149 pounds to
finish in third place. He recorded a pin and three decisions on
the afternoon.
