WARRIOR
WRESTLING PLACES THIRD AT ITHACA TOURNAMENT;
CLAIMS SEVEN PLACE WINNERS
ITHACA, NY –
The Lycoming College wrestling team returned home from the Ithaca
College Wrestling Invitational with a third place team finish and
seven individual placewinners. The Warriors scored 122 points in
the two-day event behind Division I Cornell University with 144
points and The College of New Jersey with 143.5 points.
Freshman Corey
Mowrey (Montgomery, PA; Montgomery) was the surprise of the
tournament for Lycoming going 6-0 to claim the 149-pound
championship. Mowrey tallied two major decisions and four regular
decisions en route to the weight class title in his first
collegiate tournament.
Mike Waldron
(So./Williamsport, PA; Williamsport)
also provided a highlight, placing second at 133 pounds in his
first outing for the Warriors. Waldron dominated his weight on his
way to the finals recording three pins and a major decision before
falling 13-10. Nate Niman (Sr./Newport, PA; Newport) picked
up a third-place finish in the same weight class going 6-1 in the
competition.
At 184 pounds
junior Jeff Tierney (Blairstown, NJ; North Warren Regional)
added a fourth place finish to Lycoming’s totals. Tierney went
3-2 with one pin in the tournament.
Sean Reese
(Fr./Milton, PA; Milton)
and Jeremy Betz (Jr./Muncy, Pa.; Muncy) placed fifth and
sixth respectively at 141 pounds. Both wrestlers went 5-2 on the
weekend.
Jeremy Adams
(So./Clearfield, PA; Clearfield)
rounded out the placewinners with a sixth-place finish at 149
pounds. Adams advanced to the semifinals of his weight class
before finishing with three losses.
“Overall the
weekend went very well,” said Lycoming Head Coach Roger Crebs.
“Our initial goal was to finish in the top ten teams. We got up
here and sent 17 wrestlers into Saturday, so our goal changed to a
top-five finish and we achieved that.
“Corey
Mowrey was a big, big surprise winning 149. We are thrilled about
that. Mike Waldron really turned the corner and did a good job
getting to the finals, now he just needs to work on his
conditioning a little bit. Nate Niman also wrestled very well this
weekend. All our guys worked very hard and I’m real happy with
where we are at as a team right now.”
