WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lycoming College women’s lacrosse team lost a heartbreaker to Widener University, on Saturday afternoon, 7-6 in overtime. Jenn Sturm scored with 1:18 remaining in the second overtime period to give the visiting Pioneers the Middle Atlantic Conference victory. The loss was the Warriors’ first in six games and drops their record to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the MAC. Widener improves to 4-3 and 2-1.

Lycoming started strong, scoring the first two goals on the game. Freshman Lauren Evangelist (Perkiomen; Boyertown) recorded the first goal at 28:08 from a free position. Hillary Barrett (Sr./Collegeville; Perkiomen Valley) followed less than two minutes later with an unassisted goal. Brenda MacPhail (Sr./Newtown Square; Marple Newtown) added a pair of goals later in the period, giving the Warriors four goals before the half. Widener answered with goals by Mary Frances Dolan and Elizabeth Bartman to trail 4-2 at halftime.

In the second half, the two teams traded goals early as Dolan and Evangelist each recorded their second score of the game. The Pioneers then pulled within one with less than seven minutes to play when Bartman tallied her second goal. Less than two minutes later, Sturm scored for Widener to tie the score at five and send the game to overtime.

Heather Wilt (Sr./Wyoming; Dallas Senior) put Lycoming ahead 6-5 just 22 seconds into the first overtime, but Dolan answered for the Pioneers with her third goal of the game. Widener then won the game on Sturm’s goal with 1:18 remaining in the second OT.

Evangelist and MacPhail each had two goals for the Warriors. Barrett and Wilt each added another. For the Pioneers, Dolan tallied three goals, while Bartman and Sturm each scored a pair.
