WARRIOR WOMEN’S LACROSSE WINS SEASON FINALE

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lycoming College women’s lacrosse team completed the most successful season in the program’s five-year history with a 13-12 win over Elmira College, Sunday afternoon. The victory gives the Warriors a final record of 11-5 for the 2001 season.

Neither team could take control of a back-and-forth game that featured 10 ties and five lead changes. Lycoming took the initial advantage carrying a 5-4 lead into the half. Elmira, however, quickly tied the game in the opening seconds of the second half and later took a 7-6 lead. The Warriors scored the next three goals to take their largest lead of the game at 9-7. But the Eagles would fight back yet again to tie the game and eventually pull ahead, 12-11 with 7:54 to play in the game. Lycoming answered just 36 seconds later with a tying goal and five minutes later with the go-ahead goal. The Warriors then turned up the pressure defensively and Jessica Miller (Sr./Emmaus; Emmaus) made two big saves to preserve the win.

Brenda MacPhail (Sr./Newtown; Marple Newtown) led the offense with six goals and two assists in her final collegiate game. MacPhail ends her career as Lycoming’s all-time leading scorer with 170 career goals. Colleen Kenyon (Jr./Milmont Park; Ridley Senior) added two goals to the effort. Hillary Barrett (Sr./Collegeville; Perkiomen Valley), Lauren Evangelist (Fr./Perkiomen; Boyertown), Judith Pane (So./Saint James, NY; Smithtown), Darlene Moyer (Sr./York; Central York) and Sarah Gibbons (So./East Hampton, CT; East Hampton) accounted for the other Warrior scores.

Michelle Farrell was Elmira’s leading scorer with a game-high seven goals on the afternoon.

Miller made 10 saves in goal for Lycoming. Christine Zalusky was in goal for the Eagles, making eight saves in the game.
