LYCOMING WOMEN’S LACROSSE DEFEATS MESSIAH;
SETS NEW MARK FOR WINS IN A SEASON

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Lycoming College women’s lacrosse team hung on to defeat Messiah College, 7-6, in a Middle Atlantic Conference game Thursday afternoon. The win improves the Warriors’ overall record to 9-4 and conference mark to 2-3. The Falcons fall to 4-5 and 2-3. The nine wins for Lycoming is a new season high for the fifth-year program.

In a defensive first half, the Warriors grabbed the initial advantage, posting a pair of goals in the first 30 minutes to lead 2-0 at the half. Colleen Kenyon (Jr./Milmont Park; Ridley Senior) and Lauren Evangelist (Fr./Perkiomen; Boyertown) tallied the unassisted goals for Lycoming.

Messiah broke through with the first goal of the second half to cut the Warriors’ lead in half. Lycoming responded with a pair of goals to build their largest lead of the game at 4-1 with just over 22 minutes to play. The Falcons, however, came rushing back to tie the game at four by scoring three unanswered goals in just 65 seconds.

Stunned by the sudden comeback, the Warriors regained some composure when Darlene Moyer (Sr./York; Central York) found Hillary Barrett (Sr./Collegeville; Perkiomen Valley) for a goal to regain the lead. But Messiah refused to go away, answering Lycoming’s go-ahead goal just 48 seconds later.

The score remained knotted at five until Evangelist scored her second goal of the game to put the Warriors on top once again. Brenda MacPhail (Sr./Newtown Square; Marple Newtown) then added an insurance goal with seven minutes remaining in the game. That goal would prove to the game-winner as the Falcons scored once more but then could not get the ball away from Lycoming’s control offense as time ran down.

Jessica Miller (Sr./Emmaus; Emmaus) played a spectacular game in goal for the Warriors, making 13 saves and holding Messiah scoreless through the first half. Rachel Barr made 10 saves in net for the Falcons.

Lycoming will return to action following the Easter holidays, hosting the University of Scranton on April 19.
