Bring on the Playoffs!
Lady Warriors Set New Team Wins Mark in Victory Over
Wilkes
Box Score
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. --- They say it’s always good to go into
the playoffs riding a bit of a high.
The Lycoming women’s lacrosse team will look to prove the
certainty of that notion on Tuesday, May 2, as the Lady Warriors
ripped off an 18-6 win over Wilkes University to set a new
Lycoming single-season mark with their 12th win of the
season. Lycoming caps
its most successful season with a 12-3 overall record, 8-2 in
Middle Atlantic Conference play.
The Lady Warriors, having also posted the first winning
conference record in squad history, will occupy the third seed in
next week’s MAC postseason tournament.
Elizabethtown College will travel to Williamsport for the
heated affair set to begin at 4:00 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic
Complex.
Lycoming struck early and often against an overpowered Wilkes
squad. Freshman Sarah
Wingerden (Macedon, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) recorded the first
of five straight blue and gold tallies to open the contest. Sophomore Heather Suit (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck)
dished out two of her seven assists during the scoring spurt
including Wingerden’s opening effort.
Freshman Kelli Morsey (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall)
chipped in the first of her three scores to give Lycoming a 2-0
lead with 27:53 on the clock. Sophomore Megan Wallenhorst (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit)
used another Suit feed for her first goal, and freshman Kelly
Mack (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt) made it 4-0 with 27:03 on the
clock. Wingerden
capped the run with an unassisted tally at the 25:05 mark.
Wilkes could only manage to slow the bleeding.
After the Colonels notched their first goal of the game,
Lycoming churned out four more unanswered goals.
Wingerden and Mack split the pipes for the first two while
Wallenhorst added the final pair to give Lycoming a commanding 9-1
advantage with 7:03 to play in the half.
Each squad added one more before the half’s final horn to
send the Lady Warriors to the intermission up 10-2.
Wilkes opened the frame with two goals surrounding a Lycoming
tally to cut down the Lady Warriors’ margin by one to 11-4.
Lycoming responded with its second four-goal streak of the
game. Suit assisted
on three of the goals, connecting with Mack, Morsey and
Wallenhorst. The
latter added the lone unaided effort off a free-position shot.
The Colonels knocked in their fifth goal with 12:14 to play
to make the score 15-5, but Lycoming jumped back with three more
goals. Wingerden and
Morsey capped their impressive days with their fifth and third
tallies, respectively. Freshman
Crystal Cody (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) added the third
score for her 15th of the season with 5:36 to play.
Wilkes tacked on the game’s final mark a few minutes
before the final horn.
Lycoming opens the playoffs on Tuesday, April 29, against
Elizabethtown College at 4:00 p.m.
Middle Atlantic Conference rules require an admission fee
