WHITTIER,
Calif. --- The Lycoming women's lacrosse team had no problem
getting used to the West Coast lifestyle as the Lady Warriors
handily defeated Whittier College 21-3. Lycoming moves to
1-0 on the season while the Poets fall to 0-5.
Scoring came early and often for the Lady Warriors as the first
few minutes had a distinctively "fresh" feeling. First
year attackers Sarah Wingerden (Macedon,
N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) and Kelly Mack (New Egypt, N.J./New
Egypt) tallied the first four goals for Lycoming in the
opening minutes. Wingerden opened with a single tally
followed by three straight from her freshman teammate before
Whittier finally jumped on the board to stifle the blue and gold
onslaught.
The Poets tried to use an extended pressure defense against
Lycoming, chasing Lady Warrior attackers out as far as the
wings. The result of the strategy spawned 22 Lycoming
scores, all but five coming unassisted. The Lady Warriors'
individual athleticism was too much for Whittier to defend in
one-on-one situations, allowing the Lady Warrior attackers to
beat their defenders on the carry.
Wingerden
finished the Lady Warriors inaugural match with five goals and
an assist while sophomore Megan Wallenhorst (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit)
dropped in four goals. Mack
notched one more tally to cap her first Lycoming contest with
four goals while fellow first year midfielder Crystal Cody
(Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) registered three goals and two
assists.
Freshmen Kelli Morsey (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) added
two goals and Morgan Reale (Phelps, N.Y./DeSales Reg.)
one score while sophomore Heather Suit (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck)
notched a goal and an assist and junior Cassie Mocyk
(Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) recorded her first
goal of the season.
The second-year tandem of Kristina Peacock (Webster,
N.Y./Webster-Thomas) and Ashley Meyer (Pittsford,
N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) split action between the pipes.
Neither was particularly busy in facing a combined five shots.
Lycoming is next in action on Friday, March 3, as the Lady
Warriors square off with Claremont-McKenna in the second game of
their California swing. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
(10:00 p.m. EST).
