Lycoming
Loses Battle With Eastern
Baker’s Last Minute
Goal Sends it to Overtime
WILLIAMSPORT,
Pa.—Lycoming’s women’s lacrosse team (12-3, 7-2) fell to
non-conference opponent Eastern University (13-2) on Friday in
overtime by a score of 14-12. Eastern is ranked second in the
Pennsylvania Athletic Conference.
Inevitably,
one of these powerhouses was losing its third game of the
season. The Lady Warriors showed great intensity out of the
gate, scoring the game’s first five goals. Freshman Justine
Titko (Wrightstown, NJ) started it off on an assist from
junior Heather Suit (Annapolis, MD) at 26:46. By 24:55,
Sarah Wingerden (Macedon, NY), Amanda Baker (Media, PA)
and Megan McIntyre (Baltimore, MD) had added goals of
their own. Baker, who notched three goals on the day, assisted
McIntyre’s score and found the net herself at 12:04.
Eastern’s
Jessie Basch opened the Lady Eagles scoring with a free
position goal at 10:36. Then began the Kate Hoy show.
Eastern’s Hoy netted the first of her ten goals on a free
position shot at 6:32, then scored again thirty seconds later.
Lycoming’s Megan Wallenhorst (Rochester, NY) scored next
on another Suit assist, before Hoy put it between the pipes once
more.
McIntyre
then recorded three straight goals in less than two minutes to
put the Lady Warriors up 9-3. But Hoy landed two free
position goals in the half’s final minute to make it 9-6 at the
break.
Lycoming’s
Kelly Mack (New Egypt, NJ) opened the second half with an
unassisted score less than two minutes in. But Eastern answered
with four straight goals, two by Hoy and two by Erin Reimel.
Mack scored again at 9:46, but Hoy followed with another.
At 4:19,
Erin Fries put the Lady Eagles up 12-11. Solid defense and
keep away killed more than four minutes of clock and it looked
as if the Lady Warriors were done. But, with 16 seconds
remaining in regulation, Amanda Baker netted a thrilling
goal on Suit's third assist of the game to give Lycoming new life.
However, Hoy
scored once in each overtime half, while the Lady Warriors
managed just two shots in all of overtime. Lycoming goalie
Kristina Peacock (Webster, NY) made two excellent saves in
the extra periods, giving her 15 on the day. In last week’s loss
at Drew, Peacock became the Lady Warriors’ all-time saves
leader, eclipsing Mandi Stranix’ mark of 419.
Lycoming
plays its final regular season conference game tomorrow (April
28) at Wilkes. The Lady Warriors play their first MAC playoff
game on Tuesday, May 1. |
