Lycoming
Defeats #13 Messiah
Lady Warriors Make a
Strong Bid for National Ranking
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.—On a misty Wednesday afternoon, Lycoming’s
women’s lacrosse team dropped nationally-ranked Messiah by a
score of 16-11 at Shangraw Athletic Complex. The Lady Warriors
(5-0, 1-0) remain undefeated on the season following their first
conference win.
Lycoming
played a physical game from the opening whistle and netted the
game’s first three goals. Sophomore midfielder Sarah
Wingerden (Macedon, NY) scored unassisted just 1:25 into the
contest, while fellow sophomore Kelly Mack (New Egypt, NJ)
followed with two goals in the next 40 seconds. The Lady
Warriors never relinquished the lead. Wingerden finished the
game with three goals and two assists, while Mack also scored
thrice.
Junior
attack Megan Wallenhorst (Rochester, NY) and freshman
attack Megan McIntyre (Baltimore, MD) each landed three
goals in the first period and Lycoming went into halftime
leading 11-6. Wallenhorst and McIntyre finished with a game-high
four goals apiece on the day. Wallenhorst added an assist.
The Lady
Warrior defense, led by junior goalkeeper Kristina Peacock
(Webster, NY), junior Lauren Raby (Walnutport, PA)
and senior Erin Dillon (Bayside, NY) stifled the Lady
Falcons with in-your-face play. Likewise, Lycoming’s speedy midfield consistently cleared the ball,
while Wallenhorst alone controlled seven draws.
Peacock nabbed eight saves and six ground balls from between the
pipes.
The home crowd
was large and lively, led by members of several Lycoming sports
teams. Gamma Delta Sigma also showed up in force, carrying signs to cheer
on their five sorority sisters who play lacrosse.
The Lady
Warriors looked fast, talented and tough today. Their team
chemistry seemed to gel for this key conference match-up.
Lycoming will now face Widener on Saturday, March 17 in
Philadelphia. Check
