Lycoming
Lacrosse Player Returns from Australia
Robertson Training
with National Canadian Lacrosse Team
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.–Lycoming College freshman lacrosse player
Brianna Robertson didn’t spend her winter break at home in
Brechin, Ontario. Robertson is the lone Canadian on Lycoming’s
roster and has had the recent privilege of being selected to
represent Canada on the Canadian women’s under-19 field lacrosse
team. Previously, she has taken the field for Team Ontario in
national competitions and in last year’s Ontario Summer Games.
Of the top 90 Canadian lacrosse players who tried out for the
team, only 26 were chosen for the trip to Australia. Proving her
worth throughout four training camps and a pair of exhibition
tournaments, Robertson was selected for the trip. She knew that
afterward, the team would be cut down to 20 members for the
upcoming International Federation of Women’s Lacrosse
Association Under-19 World Champions.
Although a
spot on the roster was not guaranteed for any of the 20 members
(that will later be narrowed down to the final 18 just before
the World Championships) Brianna has benefited greatly from this
experience. “I cannot tell you how much Brianna has improved
from the first time I saw her play when I was recruiting her,”
head coach Kara Reber says, “She adds an extremely high
level of focus and an excellent work ethic to our team. Brianna
was very fortunate to be selected to represent Team Canada in
Australia and has proven she will do what it takes to be the
best.”
Robertson
adds, “Australia was a great experience, we had the opportunity
to play good competition, both against the Australian Junior
National Team and against members of the last Senior Australian
National Team who won the World Cup. We also played against the
Japanese squad. I had to follow a strict training program over
the past year and a half which has improved my fitness, stick
skills, strength and mental toughness. I’ve learned a lot
playing with the team, and I’m happy to have had the opportunity
to represent my country.”
After a 2006
campaign that ended with a 14-4 record and a spot at the Middle
Atlantic Conference finals, the Lady Warriors and Robertson are
looking forward to another competitive season in 2007. Their
campaign begins on February 26 (spring break) in Disney,
Florida.
