WARRIOR WOMEN’S LACROSSE WINS THRILLER IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lycoming College women’s lacrosse team traveled to Moravian College, Friday afternoon, for a Freedom Conference match-up. The Warriors overcame an 8-3 second-half deficit to force overtime and eventually win in a second extra period by a score of 14-13. The victory improves Lycoming’s record to 3-5 and 1-4. The Greyhounds fall to 1-8 and 0-6.

The Warriors scored three times in the first 10 minutes of the contest to jump out to a 3-1 lead. Moravian, however, shut Lycoming out the rest of the half and scored seven unanswered goals to take an 8-3 lead four minutes into the second half.

This time it was the Warriors who fought back, outscoring the Greyhounds 8-3 over the final 25 minutes of regulation to force overtime.  Nicole Carlozzi (Fr./West Chester, Pa.; Bishop Shanahan) scored the game-tying goal on an assist from Cassie Mocyk (Fr./Baldwinsville, N.Y.; Charles W. Baker) with 4:31 remaining in regulation.

In the first overtime each team scored twice to send the game to a sudden-victory second-overtime. Lauren Evangelist (Sr./Perkiomen, Pa.; Boyertown) won the opening draw control and raced towards the goal where she was fouled. Evangelist was granted a free-position opportunity and took advantage scoring the game-winning goal just 17 seconds in the second extra period.

Evangelist led Lycoming with eight goals in the contest – tying the Warriors’ single-game record. Carlozzi and Mocyk each added two goals, and Kristen Dart (Jr./Saratoga, N.Y.; Saratoga Springs) and Erin Robinson (So./West Hartford, Conn.; Kingswood-Oxford) each scored once. Laurie Rooney (Sr./Audubon, N.J.; Audubon) made 12 saves in goal for Lycoming.

The Greyhounds were led by Shannon Kelly (So./Southlake, Texas; Carroll) with four goals and three assists. Jess Cordani (So./Point Pleasant, N.J.; Point Pleasant Boro) and Lindsay Lustrino (Fr./Spring Lake, N.J.; Manasquan) each added four goals, as well. Lindsay Murphy (Sr./Lansdale, Pa.; North Penn) accounted for Moravian’s other score. Hayley Zamek (Jr./Hillsborough, N.J.; Hillsborough) made seven saves goal for the Greyhounds.

The Warriors will play again on Tuesday, April 13, when they travel to Messiah College.
