LA
PLUME, Pa. --- Lycoming women’s basketball clamped down on
the Giants with suffocating defense as the Lady Warriors
snapped their four game losing skid with a 69-56 triumph
over Keystone College on Monday evening.
With the win, Lycoming improves to 5-15 on the season
while the Giants fall to 4-16.
The Lady
Warriors came out of the locker room for the second half
with a defensive pressure not seen by the squad this season
as they held the Giants to just four points in the first ten
minutes of play. Overall,
Lycoming outscored Keystone 30-19 in the second frame and
held the Giants to only 25.9 percent shooting (7-for-27)
from the field.
Freshman
Andrea Cooper (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg)
recorded one of her most complete games of the season with a
game-high 21 points to go along with a team-best 12
rebounds, five assists, four blocked shots, and four steals.
Senior Danielle Kern (Lehman, Pa./Lake-Lehman)
dropped in 15 points while pulling down eight boards and
ripping away two steals.
Freshman Lauren Carey (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge)
continued her recent strong play with 10 points and three
assists while knocking down a pair of threes as well.
Sophomore Michelle Wisla (Schwenksville,
Pa./Perkiomen Valley) and freshman Marissa Hastings
(Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) added seven apiece.
Three
players notched double figures for Keystone led by 18 points
from Jessica Kobesky.
She also grabbed a game-best 14 rebounds and came
away with three steals.
Kerry Fallon added 17 points and Kelli
Brago tallied 14.
Lycoming
came out gunning in the first half in shooting 50.0 percent
(15-of-30) from the field, but Keystone kept pace by
shooting 12 more shots than the Warriors while knocking down
6-of-15 tries from beyond the arc. The Lady Warriors actually fell behind 16-7 early in the
period, but closed the frame with a 32-21 run to go into the
half up two at 39-37.
Normally
a pair of Achilles’ heels for the Warriors, rebounding and
shooting proved strengths on this night.
Lycoming won the battle on the glass, albeit by a
small margin, with a 44-42 edge including 13 offensive
boards (Keystone had 17 on the offensive glass). With strong glasswork combined with a 43.5 percent to 30.9
percent advantage in field goal shooting, not to mention the
Warriors usual excellent marksmanship from the charity
stripe (12-of-17 for 70.6 percent), tonight’s winning
formula was simply in the numbers.
Lycoming
returns home to Lamade Gymnasium for its next contest on
Wednesday, February 8, as the Lady Warriors welcome King’s
College to Williamsport for a Freedom Conference match up.
Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
