Lycoming
Surges to Topple LVC
Lady Warriors Battle
Back in Final Three Minutes
ANNVILLE, Pa.—In a hard-fought battle at Lebanon Valley, the
Lady Warriors found themselves down by four points with
three minutes to go. But Lycoming battled back and earned a
54-53 victory on Wednesday night.
The Lady
Warriors played celebration spoiler, defeating the Lady
Dutchmen in the 100th college basketball game
played at LVC Gymnasium. Several freshmen led Lycoming,
including Alicia Engler (Williamsport, PA), who
scored 14 of her 16 points in the game’s opening period.
Engler made all four of her three-point attempts in the
first half, and finished four-of-seven from beyond the arc.
Lycoming
led early in the game thanks to Engler’s strong start and a
half-ending tip-in by freshman Renee Freeden (Summit, NJ).
Freeden finished with six points and four rebounds.
Lebanon
Valley went on an 11-2 run and grabbed the lead late in the game, but
Lady Warrior sophomore Andrea Cooper (Hollidaysburg, PA)
scored seven unanswered points to give Lyco a one-point
advantage with two minutes left. Engler then made two
free-throw attempts, followed by an LVC bucket by Amie
Bickert with one minute to go.
Lebanon
Valley fouled Engler again, but she was unable to
convert the front end of a one-and one. With 12
seconds to go and the score 54-53, Lycoming fouled senior
Monica Johnson on an in-bound pass, setting up a
two-shot, game-deciding chance from the line. Luckily for
Lycoming, Johnson, who posted her fourth double-double of
the season, missed both shots. A Freeden rebound
sealed the Lady Warriors’ victory.
Lycoming
takes their record to 3-4 and looks to tip the scales
to the winning side at the Elmira Tournament this weekend.
The Lady Warriors host their own Lycoming Tournament on
January 5-6 at Lamade Gymnasium.
