UPSET SCRANTON;

STRONG 500TH WIN
WILLIAMSPORT,
Pa. – The Lycoming College women’s basketball team hosted the
University of Scranton, Wednesday evening, in the opening game of
a MAC Freedom Conference doubleheader. The Lady Warriors pulled of
an upset by defeating the nationally ranked Lady Royals, 64-54.
Lycoming overcame a five-point deficit at halftime to outscore 19th
ranked Scranton by 15 in the second half.
It
was obvious from the opening tip that this game would be a
defensive struggle as both teams combined for just 17 points
during the first 10 minutes of action. The Lady Warriors grabbed
an early six-point lead before the Lady Royals began to assert
themselves. Halfway through the opening period, Scranton went on a
16-3 run to open up a 10-point advantage – it would be their
largest lead of the game. Lycoming used a small 7-2 run at the end
of the half to close within five.
In
the second half, the Lady Warriors turned up the defensive
pressure, holding the Lady Royals to just 26 points and 33%
shooting from the field. Lycoming battled to stay within striking
distance of Scranton through the first 13 minutes of the half.
Then over the final seven minutes, the Lady Warriors held to
Royals to just six points while scoring 21 of their own.
Lyndy
LeVan (So./South Williamsport; South Williamsport)
was the game’s top performer with 22 points and 13 rebounds to
lead all players in both categories. Jenalynn Boos (Sr./Roseto;
Pius X) added 11 points and eight rebounds. Senior Adrienne
Wydra (Ashland; North Schuylkill) recorded six assists and two
steals while scoring 10 points. Freshman Emily DiMarco
(Voorhees, NJ; Eastern) added a spark off the bench with 10
points, including two three-pointers.
Lisa
Crawford was the leading scorer for the Lady Royals with 10
points.
Lycoming
improves their overall record to 8-10 and their conference record
to 4-6 with the win. Scranton falls to 15-4 and 7-3. The loss also
leaves Scranton head coach Mike Strong stuck at 499 career
victories. The Lady Warriors will travel to Susquehanna University
on Saturday for a Middle Atlantic Conference crossover game
beginning at 1 p.m.
