LADY
WARRIORS USE SECOND HALF TO
DOWN LADY COLONELS
WILKES-BARRE, Pa.
– The Lycoming College women’s basketball team traveled Wilkes
University Wednesday evening and came home with their first MAC
Freedom Conference victory of the season. The Lady Warriors turned
a 35-35 halftime score into a 76-51 victory by turning up the
defensive pressure in the second half. Over the final 20 minutes
of play the Lady Colonels were held to just 16 points on 29.2%
shooting from the field.
Lycoming took
their first lead early in the game and stretched it to as many as
eight in the first half. Wilkes refused to go away, however,
sticking around by hitting 15-of-15 free throws. The Lady Warriors
stepped up the defense immediately after the intermission, holding
the Lady Colonels to just five points during the opening ten
minutes of the second period. Lycoming went on to build their lead
to as many as 28 before the game ended with a 25-point margin.
Amy Lesko
(Jr./Mountaintop; Crestwood)
led all scorers with 22 points in the contest. Lyndy LeVan
(So./South Williamsport; South Williamsport) and Emily
DiMarco (Fr./Voorhees, NJ; Eastern) each chipped in double
figures as well, with 17 points and 14 points respectively. LeVan
also led the team with five assists. Jenalynn Boos (Sr./Roseto;
Pius X) led all players with 11 rebounds.
“This was a
good win away from home, especially in this gym,” said head
coach Christen Ditzler. “I was very happy with our offense
tonight. They tried to slow us down with a zone defense but we
took good shots. Amy Lesko was on fire and Emily DiMarco and Lyndy
LeVan each had great games as well.
“The game was
really all about defense. In the first half, we were sloppy and
sent them to the line fifteen times. In the second half, we
cleaned it up and it was the difference in the game. Hopefully we
can put two halves like that together on Sunday against Del.
Val.”
The
Lady Warriors improved to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in the MAC Freedom
Conference. Wilkes fell to 2-9 and 0-4. Lycoming will return home
on Sunday to host Delaware Valley College at 1 p.m. The Aggies
were 11-0 entering action Wednesday evening.
