WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Lycoming women’s basketball ended its
four game skid with 68-60 victory over Penn State-Altoona on
Tuesday evening in Lamade Gymnasium. The Lady Warriors
improve to 2-5 on the season while the Lions fall to 2-3.
Lycoming
enjoyed a double-digit advantage on several occasions
throughout the contest, but a 12-0 run to open the game
spurred the Warriors on to a strong shooting evening. Eight
of those first dozen points came via a pair of
three-pointers and a long jumper from senior Amy Kile (Muncy,
Pa./Muncy).
Kile and
freshman Andrea Cooper (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg)
each scored 20 or more points marking the first occurrence
of such a score line this season for Lycoming. Cooper led
all scorers with 21 tallies on 6-of-11 shooting from the
field and an 8-for-8 outing from the foul line. She also
added eight rebounds, four assists, and blocked four shots
to improve upon her Freedom Conference leading two swats per
game. Kile dropped in 20 points on 5-for-12 shooting
including a trio of long range hits. She also collected
eight rebounds and blocked a shot.
Guard
Brittany Poorman led the Lion attack with 17 points and
eight rebounds while Erin McGowan added 13 tallies
and seven boards.
Lycoming
came out firing in the first half, hitting on eight of its
first 10 shots to push out to an 18-10 lead with 12:37
left. PSU-Altoona, aided by a strong full-court press,
clawed back to enjoy a four-point lead at 35-31 with less
than three minutes to play in the half. The Warriors
clamped down, not allowing the Lions to score for the
remainder of the period and went into the intermission up
37-35.
The Lions
would not be as close as two points for the rest of the
game. Lycoming turned up the defense on PSU-Altoona’s
perimeter game and began taking the ball into the paint on
offense. The Warriors went to the charity stripe 18 times
during the second stanza, cashing in on 14 of the free
tries.
Lycoming
shot 43.5 percent from the field (20-for-46) for the game,
the squad’s most efficient output since its first victory
against SUNY-Fredonia in the season’s second game. The
Warriors canned 5-of-10 three-pointers and converted
23-of-28 free throw attempts for an 82.1 percent average.
Lycoming
looks to make it two in a row on Saturday, December 10, as
the Warriors travel to Juniata College to battle the Golden
Eagles. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
