LYCOMING
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GRABS CONFERENCE WIN OVER DELAWARE VALLEY
WILLIAMSPORT, PA
– The Lycoming College women’s basketball team picked up their
first conference win of the season, Saturday evening, defeating
Delaware Valley College 75-72. The Warriors had four players score
in double digits and got solid play from their bench en route to
the key league victory. Lycoming is now 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the
Freedom Conference. The Aggies fall to 1-4 and 0-2.
In the opening
period the action was back-and-forth as neither team could build a
margin greater than five. The Warriors had to go to their bench
early when Lyndy LeVan (Sr./South Williamsport, PA; South
Williamsport) picked up two quick fouls. Katy Kresge
(Jr./Lehighton, PA; Marian Catholic) and Rebecca Pugh
(Fr./Pine Grove, PA; Pine Grove) each scored eight points to
keep Lycoming in the game with a 34-34 halftime score.
In the second
half the Warriors began to pull away with a 14-2 run that gave
them a 54-44 lead with 15 minutes to play. Delaware Valley,
however, slowly chipped away at the deficit eventually gaining a
64-62 advantage with seven minutes remaining. Three lead changes
later, Michelle Stine (So./Mill Hall, PA; Central Mountain)
made a lay-up to knot the game at 72-72 with 59 seconds on the
clock. From there, Lycoming forced two turnovers and two missed
shots while recording a free throw by LeVan and a lay-up by Emily DiMarco (Jr./Voorhees, PA; Eastern) to secure
the win.
“This was a
great win for us,” said Warrior head coach Chris Ditzler. “I
was very pleased with how we kept our composure during the
comeback and then in the final minutes. The bench did a great job
for us, especially Kresge and Pugh. Any win is a good win, but
being a conference game makes it even more important.”
Mindy Culp
(So./New Columbia, PA; Milton)
and DiMarco each scored 16 points to lead Lycoming. LeVan added 12
markers and Kresge chipped in 10 off the bench. Amy Herschman
(So./Northampton, PA; Northampton) grabbed a team-high six
rebounds and Stine led the squad with six assists.
The Warriors are
off for a full week before traveling to Fredonia State on
Saturday, December 14, for a non-conference tilt. Tip-off is set
for 4 p.m.
