LYCOMING
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TRIPPED UP IN OVERTIME
WILKES-BARRE, PA - The Lycoming College women's basketball team played their first Freedom Conference contest of the young season, Wednesday evening, at Wilkes University. The Warriors led most of the game but could not close out the win falling 79-76 in overtime to the Colonels. With the victory, Wilkes remained undefeated improving to 5-0. Lycoming falls to 2-2 with the loss.
The Warriors led most of the contest after an 11-0 run midway through the first half gave them a 28-19 advantage. That lead held up throughout the remainder of the opening period as Lycoming went to the locker room ahead 40-31.
In the second half, the Warriors maintained a 5-to-10 point cushion for more than 18 minutes, including a 69-63 edge with just 1:49 to play. The Colonels, however, had no intention of conceding the game. A jump shot by Rena Bolin and a three-pointer by Danielle Kresock quickly cut Lycoming's lead to a single point.
A pair of free throws by Mindy Culp (So./New Columbia, PA; Milton) put the Warriors back in front by three, but another jumper by Kresock brought the score to 71-70. Single free throws by
Lyndy LeVan (Sr./South Williamsport, PA; South Williamsport) and
Emily DiMarco (Jr./Voorhees, NJ; Eastern) gave Lycoming a 73-70 edge with just 10 seconds showing on the clock. But 10 seconds was half a second more than Wilkes needed as Andrea Kacprowicz banked in a triple to tie the game with six-tenths of a second left on the clock. The clutch bucket knotted the score at 76-76 and forced an extra period.
In the overtime, a LeVan jumper and a DiMarco free throw sandwiched around a Kacpowicz layup set the score at 76-75 Warriors with 1:11 to play. Kacpowicz, however, played the hero once again making a free throw with 47 ticks remaining to give her team a lead they would not relinquish.
DiMarco led Lycoming with 23 points and 11 rebounds in the contest. LeVan added 21 markers and nine boards. Culp also reached double figures with 12 points in the game. Point guard
Michelle Stine (So./Mill Hall, PA; Central Mountain) tallied a team-high six assists.
The Warriors are at home for their next contest, hosting Delaware Valley College on Saturday, December 7. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
