WOMEN’S BASKETBALL LOSES IN OVERTIME
WILLIAMSPORT, PA
– The Lycoming College women’s basketball team hosted Fredonia
State, Saturday evening in their final contest before conference
plays begins. The Warriors battled back from a number of deficits
but came up short in the end, losing 82-77 in overtime. The Blue
Devils improved to 3-2 with the victory, while Lycoming fell to
3-3 overall.
The
first half featured 10 lead changes and six tied scores as neither
team could take control of the game. Both squads led by as many as
five in the initial period, but each time the trailing team
responding to close the gap. Fredonia carried the momentum into
the half with a 36-31 lead behind 10 points by Kim Yorgy.
The
Warriors opened the second half strong, fighting back to tie the
score at 42 only to see the Blue Devils go on a 9-2 run and take
their largest lead of the game. Lycoming came back again, however,
tying the score at 57 with seven minutes to play. The
back-and-forth battle continued right to the final buzzer with the
score tied at 68.
In
overtime, Laurie Scherer (Sr./Mahanoy City, PA; Mahanoy City)
put back a lay-up to give the Warriors the initial lead, but it
was all Fredonia the rest of the way. The Blue Devils went 5-for-9
from the field and 4-for-6 from the free-throw line in the extra
period, while Lycoming could connect on just 3-of-10 shots. Mimi
Williams accounted for eight points in overtime and Clare Crowley
added five as Fredonia stole to win.
Lyndy
LeVan (Jr./South Williamsport, PA; South Williamsport)
led the Warriors with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Scherer added 12
points, seven rebounds, and four blocked shots. Mindy Culp
(Fr./New Coulmbia, PA; Milton) and Katie Santo (Sr./Scotch
Plains, NJ; Union Catholic) each reached double figures in
scoring as well with 11 and 10 markers, respectively.
Lycoming
returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 5, when they host Wilkes
University at 6 p.m. to kick off action in the Middle Atlantic
Freedom Conference.
