VOLLEYBALL OPENS SEASON WITH SPLIT AT GETTYSBURG TOURNAMENT
GETTYSBURG, PA
– The Lycoming College volleyball team traveled to Gettysburg
College this weekend to open their season in an 18-team
tournament. The Warriors went 2-2 in the tourney, defeating Seton
Hill, 3-0; and Johns Hopkins, 3-2; and falling to Mary Washington,
3-1; and Moravian, 3-0.
On Friday,
Lycoming opened up with a 3-1 loss to Mary Washington by scores of
30-25, 30-27, 17-30, 31-29. The Warriors rebounded to defeat Seton
Hill in three games, 30-27, 30-20, 30-15. The victory combined
with Seton Hill’s win over Mary Washington put Lycoming into the
championship bracket for Saturday’s competition.
“The first
match with Mary Washington, we were a little tentative. We led
every game to 25 but couldn’t finish,” said Lycoming Head
Coach Tim McMahon. “We showed our true colors in our second
match, coming together as a team to defeat Seton Hill.
“Melanie
McCoy [(So./Bloomingburg, OH; Miami Trace)] and Kelly
Watson [(Fr./East Freedom, PA; Central)] really played well
for us in the first match. In the second match, Gretchen Hause
[(Jr./Severna Park, MD; Severna Park)] and Layne Haverstock
[(So./Hesston, PA; Huntingdon) led the way with solid hitting
from the middle.”
On Saturday, the
Warriors opened up against Moravian, falling to the Lady
Greyhounds in three games, 30-28, 30-23, 30-19. Lycoming, however,
again showed their resiliency by coming back in their second match
to defeat Johns Hopkins in five games, 30-27, 28-30, 30-27, 20-30,
15-12.
“We started a
little slow again today, but we hung tough with Moravian who is a
very good team defensively,” said McMahon. “McCoy really
played well for us, leading the team in kills from the outside.
“Against
Hopkins, Seneca Reilly [(Fr./Athens, PA; Athens)] kept us
in the game with her serving and did a great job setting as well.
Gretchen, Layne, Melanie and Kelly all hit well and we had some
solid defense from Jessa D’Achille [(Sr./Wynnewood, PA/Lower
Merion)] in the front and Jessica Held [(Jr./Allentown, PA;
Parkland) in the back.
“Overall, I’m
very happy with how we played this weekend. This was a very
competitive tournament and we hung with tough teams and also beat
some quality teams. Now we’re looking forward to getting into
our conference schedule and seeing how we match up with those
teams.”
Lycoming plays
their first Freedom Conference match on Tuesday when they travel
to Wilkes University.
