Both
Warrior Squads in Third After Day Two
Two More School Records in the
Books
WILKES-BARRE,
Pa. --- Junior Chris Dempsey (Newtown, Pa./Notre Dame) and
senior Kelly Sykes (Willimantic, Conn./Windham) set new
school records as both the Lycoming men's and women's swimming
teams jumped into third place after the conclusion of the second
day at the 2006 Middle Atlantic Conference Swimming Championships.
The Lady
Warriors have racked up 295 points just ahead of Juniata College
(282 pts.) and Widener University (279) and trailing Albright
College (476) and the University of Scranton (419). The
Warriors men have put together a strong 273-point showing ahead of
Scranton (272) and Susquehanna (223) while trailing Widener (581)
and Albright (444).
Dempsey
had an outstanding showing in the 400-yard individual medley,
finishing in third place and breaking his own record by more than
five seconds with a time of 4:20.70. Sykes finished second
in the women's 100-yard backstroke and also broke her own record,
but did so in the narrowest of fashions in a time of 1:01.67, just
one one-hundredth of a second faster than her previous time.
Lycoming
relays continued to surprise in the excellent waters at the
Wilkes-Barre CYC. In the 200-yard medley relay, the Lady
Warriors' group of freshman Nichole Zoller (Colonia, N.J./Union
Catholic), junior Amy Gatehouse (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel
Park), Sykes, and freshman Julie Harahush (Pottsville,
Pa./Pottsville) finished second in a time of 1:53.61. On
the men's side, senior Steve Hawley (New Cumberland,
Pa./Trinity), sophomore Seth Urffer (Allentown,
Pa./Parkland), and freshmen Brian Fausel (Burdett,
N.Y./Watkins Glen) and Brandon Good (Clearfield,
Pa./Clearfield) pushed the Warriors' 200-yard medley relay
team into third place with a time of 1:39.75.
In
other individual action, Hawley parlayed last season's 100-yard
backstroke victory into a second place finish this year with a
time of 53.54 seconds. In the women's 100-yard breaststroke,
Gatehouse equaled her 2005 third place finished with the same
showing this season in a time of 1:09.93.
Sykes
and senior Jeff Swatkins (Guilford, Conn./Xavier) made nice
showings in both the women's and men's 100-yard butterfly
events. Sykes finished sixth in 1:03.24 while Swatkins
placed fifth in a time of 54.50 seconds.
Freshman
Milvana Ban (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) shaved an
enormous amount of time off her qualifying 4:59.53 to finish fifth
in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:54.34.
