Hawley Earns CSCAA All-America
Award for Academics
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – In what has become a banner summer for the
academic achievements of the Lycoming College swimming teams, an
individual honor was the only thing missing from the program’s
scholastic portfolio. That void has now been filled.
Junior Steve Hawley, a native of
New Cumberland, Pa., was named an Honorable Mention All-American
in recognition of his high academic standing by the College
Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). The biology
pre-med major and Spanish minor is the first Warrior swimmer in
program history to earn any All-American award for academic
achievement. His achievements the past two seasons have helped
the men’s program earn successive team All-American honors.
“Steve is the perfect definition
of a Division III student-athlete,” explained head coach Jerry
Hammaker. “He maintains an excellent GPA in a difficult
discipline while still excelling in his athletic pursuits.
Steve goes beyond that by being active in other organizations
and activities on campus as well.”
Aside from swimming, Hawley is
involved in the pre-health society, the chemistry club, Peer
Athlete Leaders (PAL), and served as a student orientation
leader. He is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, an interdisciplinary
honor society, and Tri Beta, a biology honor society. Hawley
has also logged more than 100 hours of community service at
Harrisburg Hospital in Harrisburg, Pa.
The CSCAA honor isn’t the first
accolade Hawley has received in recent months. He was chosen as
one of 38 students nation-wide for a $1,000 study abroad grant
through Phi Kappa Phi. He was the only recipient of this award
from a college or university in Pennsylvania.
Hawley is also a standout in the
pool. He currently holds four Warrior swimming records and has
made two NCAA national cuts.
“His improvements in swimming
have been by leaps and bounds during his first three years here
leading to his emergence as a national level swimmer,” mentioned
Coach Hammaker. “Steve leads by example both in and out of the
water.”
To be considered for the CSCAA
honorable mention award, a student-athlete must achieve the
equivalent of a “B” Time Standard for the NCAA Championships. A
candidate must also have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5
or better on a 4.0 scale, or have a 3.5 grade point average or
better in the current semester or quarter. |
