LYCOMING
SWIMMERS END
REGULAR SEASON ON HIGH NOTE;
DECAPRIA QUALIFIES FOR
NATIONALS
ANNVILLE, PA –
The Lycoming College swim teams traveled to Lebanon Valley
College, Saturday afternoon, for a double-dual meet with Lebanon
Valley and FDU-Florham. Both the women’s and men’s squads
picked up a pair of wins to end the regular season. The Warrior
women defeated FDU 63-22 and Lebanon Valley 61-32. Lycoming’s
men topped FDU 63-14 and Lebanon Valley 57-30. The women end the
season with a record of 7-3, while the men complete the year at
8-2.
Nathan
DeCapria (Fr./Jersey Shore, PA; Central Mountain)
highlighted the meet for the Warrior men. DeCapria qualified for
the NCAA National Championships in the 50 freestyle with a time of
:23.46 in short-course meters during the leadoff leg of the
men’s 200 free relay. He becomes the first Lycoming swimmer to
qualify for the national championships under head coach Jerry
Hammaker.
“We’re
thrilled to have Nathan qualify for the national meet,” said
Hammaker. “It has been a long time since this program has had a
swimmer qualify and it speaks volumes about the direction the
program is now moving in.”
Dustin Long
(Fr./Halifax, PA; Halifax)
led the Warrior men to victory by winning three individual events.
Long swam the fastest times in the 800 free, 200 IM, and 100
breaststroke. Five other Lycoming men won their events: Stuart
Olsen (Fr./Evanston, IL; Evanston Twp.) in the 50 free, Rob
Neil (Sr./Dallas, PA; Dallas) in the 100 fly, Tim Roche
(Fr./Wyndmoor, PA; Springfield) in the 100 free, Chris
Mungo (Fr./Boonton, NJ; Boonton) in the 400 free, and Jeff
Swatkins (Fr./Guilford, CT; Xavier) in the 100 back.
For the women, Rebecca
Fox (So./Middletown, NJ; Middletown South) was a
double-winner, finishing first in the 100 free and 100
breaststroke. Kristen Campbell (Sr./Camp Hill, PA; Cedar Cliff)
added a win in the 100 butterfly; Erin Patrick (So./Media, PA;
Penncrest) won the 200 free; Kelly Sykes (Fr./Willimantic,
CT; Windham) was fastest in the 50 free; Erin Horsley
(So./Allegany, NY; Allegany Central) finished first in the 200
IM; and Karissa Brown (So./Chemung, NY; Waverly) won the
100 back.
Lycoming’s next
event will be the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships on
February 14-16, at Susquehanna University. The Warriors will be
sending 18 men (the maximum number of qualifiers) and 17 women to
the meet. This will be the largest contingency of Lycoming
swimmers ever at the conference championships.
“I
think we ended the season strong and I’m pleased with the times
we’re swimming,” said Hammaker. “We’re very excited that
so many of our athletes qualified for the conference meet. It
really gives us the best chance to compete for conference titles
on both sides.”
