WARRIOR SWIMMERS TRAIN IN HAWAII
WILLIAMSPORT, PA
– While most Lycoming College students are at home getting an
early start on celebrating the holidays, the Warrior swimming
teams are hard at work training for their next semester of
competition. Don’t feel too bad for these young men and women,
however, because rather than toiling in Lycoming’s own pool the
Warriors are training in H’ahu, Honolulu in Hawaii.
Lycoming’s men’s
and women’s swim teams, under the direction of head coach Jerry
Hammaker arrived in Waikiki on December 15 and will train for a
week before returning home on December 23 – just in time for
Christmas. While in Hawaii the student-athletes will be training
twice a day, putting in two-hour sessions at the University of
Hawaii Duke Kahonomoko Aquatic Center.
“The focus of
our training during this trip will be on technique improvement.
The first half of the season was a good indicator of some things
we need to work on in order to get faster,” said Hammaker. “This
trip provides us with an insulated opportunity to get that work
done before we start hard core training again on January 3rd with
two-a-days on campus before classes begin on the 12th.”
In addition to
the work in the pool, the teams and coaching staff will have the
opportunity to experience some of the culture, environment, and
history of Hawaii. The group will take a whale watching cruise,
attend a traditional beach luau, snorkel in the Pacific Ocean, and
visit Pearl Harbor and the Arizona
Memorial. The teams may also attend the World Surfing
Championships on the famous North Shore Banzai Pipeline.
The Warriors’
first competition in 2004 will be on Tuesday, January 6, when they
host Albright College for a dual meet.
