Lady Warriors Split Doubleheader with Scranton
Shaw Picks up First Victory in Opener

SCRANTON, Pa.— Lycoming College split a Freedom Conference doubleheader with The University of Scranton Saturday afternoon at Tripp Park.

The Royals failed to take advantage of five errors by the Warriors in the first game and dropped a 6-5 decision.  In the nightcap, Scranton overcame a 5-1 deficit to pull out a 7-6 win for its first victory of the season.

Senior Melissa McCoy (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) led Lycoming in the opener with three hits, including a triple, and freshman Jessica Nabholz (Cressona, Pa./Blue Mountain) belted a pair of doubles and drove in two runs during a four-run rally in the fourth inning. Junior Holly Billow (Millersburg, Pa./Millersburg Area) came through in the clutch by driving in a run with a double in the top of the seventh to give the Warriors a 7-5 advantage. Winning pitcher Katie Shaw (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) scattered seven hits, struck out five and allowed only one earned run.

In the second game, Scranton compiled 15 hits, including a 4-for-4 day by junior Mary Beth Vogel. Lycoming jumped out to a 3-0 lead on RBI singles by juniors Hilarie Powers (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) and Dana Marek (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield). Then sophomore Marissa Hastings (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) drove in a run with a first inning ground out. Marek and freshman Courtney Black (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) added RBI singles in the third as the Warriors built up a 5-1 advantage.

Scranton, however, had a four-run rally in the bottom of the third and a two-run burst in the fourth to take the lead for good.

Lady Royal Kasey Borbidge, who hit an RBI single in the first inning, earned the first pitching victory of her career and Isabel Mendez did not allow a run in relief over the final three innings.

The Lady Warriors will suit up again on Sunday afternoon for another doubleheader at Drew.
