Lady
Warriors Fall to King’s
Powers and McCoy
Smack Homers
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.—Lycoming’s softball team lost both games of
Wednesday’s doubleheader against King’s by scores of 11-2 and
9-4. Despite the final outcomes, the Lady Warriors seemed to
improve in several facets of their game.
King’s
started with a bang when Lindsey Hoerner slugged a grand
slam in the first inning of the opening game. But Lycoming
fought back as Hilarie Powers (Wellsboro, PA) powered a
two-run dinger in the bottom of the first. The homer was the
Lady Warriors’ first of the season.
Senior
Katie Shaw (Bellefonte, PA) then retired the Lady Monarchs
in order to start the second. However, Lycoming’s offense could
not get started again. Despite a 3-for-3 game from Lycoming leadoff
hitter Missy McCoy (Williamsport, PA), King’s Sue
Roccia and Becky Loring hit homers in the third and
fifth respectively to seal Lycoming’s fate.
Freshman
Jessica Nabholz (Cressona, PA) made several outstanding
defensive plays for the Lady Warriors, as Lycoming showed strong
fundamentals throughout.
In game two,
Lycoming pitcher Nicole Rhodes (Julian, PA) held King’s
to just two singles in the first three innings. Unfortunately,
the Lady Warriors couldn’t manage a hit until sophomore
Marissa Hastings (Old Forge, PA) laced a double in the
fifth. In their half of the sixth, the Lady Monarchs increased
their lead to 8-0, but Lycoming was not about to lie down.
Rhodes
opened the bottom of the sixth with the first of four straight
singles. Rhodes, McCoy and catcher Betsy Reese (State
College, PA) all scored. McCoy also belted Lycoming’s second
home run of the year in the seventh, but with another run in the
top of the final inning, King’s emerged victorious 9-4.
The Lady
Warriors travel to Wilkes on Saturday, April 14, then return
home to face Misericordia on April 17.
