LYCOMING SOFTBALL TEAM SPLITS TEN GAMES OVER SPRING BREAK

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Lycoming College softball team traveled to Orlando, Florida, over spring break to open their season by competing in the Rebel Games. The Warriors went 5-5 during the week, including victories over Concordia, Milwaukee School of Engineering, Ferrum, Eastern, and Widener.

Lycoming’s first contest was a 2-1 loss to the University of St. Francis (Ill.) in eight innings. Amy Curry (Jr./Fallentimber, Pa.; Moshannon Valley) led the team with three hits in three at-bats. Jana Reitz (Jr./Waynesboro, Pa.; Waynesboro) added two hits, while Melissa McCoy (Fr./Williamsport, Pa.; Jersey Shore) and Lauren Wilson (So./Ontario, Cal.; Chino) each recorded one hit. Morgan Mantle (So./Jersey Shore, Pa.; Jersey Shore) went the distance on the mound, giving up seven hits and one earned run, while striking out four.

The Warriors rebounded in their next outing to defeat Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) 1-0, again in eight innings. Katy Kresge (Sr./Lehighton, Pa.; Marian Catholic) drove in the lone run of the game with a single in the eighth inning. Reitz also tallied a hit in the game and scored the winning run. Kristen Reese (So./Centre Hall, Pa.; State College), Katie Shaw (Fr./Bellefonte, Pa.; Bald Eagle), and Stefanie Clugston (So./North Wales, Pa.; North Penn) also recorded hits. Reese picked up the victory on the mound, pitching eight innings and allowing just three hits, while striking out eight batters.

Lycoming was shutout versus Wartburg College, ranked eighth in the nation, 6-0. Christine Caroselli (So./Newtown, Pa.; Pennsbury), Betsy Reese (Fr./Centre Hall, Pa.; State College), McCoy, Reitz, and Kresge accounted for the Warriors’ five hits in the game. Amanda Gery (Jr./Whitehall, Pa.; Whitehall) suffered the loss, working seven innings and giving up 11 hits and three earned runs. She struck out four.

Lycoming’s bats came alive versus the Milwaukee School of Engineering, as they scored nine runs on eight hits for a 9-1 victory. Reitz and Wilson each tallied two hits and drove in two runs. Jen Shaffer (Sr./Waterville, Pa.; Jersey Shore) also drove in a pair of runs on one hit. Alicia Madigan (Jr./Waverly, N.Y.; Waverly), Clugston, and Betsy Reese each had one hit in the game. Shaw picked up the victory on the mound allowing just four hits and one run in five innings of work.

The Warriors won their second consecutive game with a 5-1 victory over Ferrum College in their next outing. McCoy led the squad with two hits, while Reitz, Curry, and Wilson each tallied one hit and one RBI. Kresge and Shaffer also each drove in a run. Mantle pitched all seven innings, allowing just two hits and one run, while striking out five.

Against Maryville, Lycoming played their third extra-innings contest of the week, falling to the Saints 1-0 in eight innings. McCoy again tallied two hits, while Morgan Rudelitch (So./Lehighton, Pa.; Lehighton), Betsy Reese, and Caroselli each added one. Kristen Reese pitched the first seven innings, giving up just four hits and striking out four batters. Mantle suffered the loss in the eighth inning allowing one hit and an unearned run.

The Warriors faced Ferrum again in their next contest, this time losing to the Lady Panthers, 4-0. Reitz and Caroselli each recorded two hits in the game. Rudelitch, Curry, and Gery each added one hit apiece. Gery also worked seven innings on the mound, allowing seven hits and two earned runs.

Lycoming fell for the third straight outing against Clarke College, 2-1. Reitz, McCoy, and Betsy Reese each dropped in two hits in the game. Christine Warholic (Sr./Eldersburg, Md.; Liberty) added the team’s seventh hit and drove in their lone run. Shaw went the distance on the mound, giving up two runs on seven hits.

The Warriors got back on the winning track with a 6-0 victory over Eastern College. Curry drove in three runs on one hit, while Reitz tallied two hits and one RBI. Betsy Reese, McCoy, Mantle,and Rudelitch each recorded one hit in the contest. Mantle tossed a one-hit shutout for the victory, striking out three.

Lycoming completed their trip with a 2-1 win over Widener University. McCoy led the team with two hits and an RBI. Shaffer also recorded two hits in the game. Reitz knocked in one run on one hit, while Rudelitch and Kristen Reese also tallied hits. Reese worked seven innings on the mound, giving up just four hits and one run, while striking out three batters.

The Warriors will play their first game north of the Mason-Dixon Line on Tuesday, March 16, at home versus Lebanon Valley College.
