WARRIOR SOFTBALL DROPS DOUBLEHEADER AT KING’S

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Lycoming College softball team traveled to King’s College, Wednesday afternoon, for an important conference doubleheader. The Warriors could not find enough offense to defeat the defending Freedom Conference champions, falling to the Monarchs 1-5 and 0-3. Lycoming drops to 10-12 overall and 4-6 in the conference. King’s improves to 24-4 and 8-0.

In the opening game, the Warriors banged out nine hits, but could only get one run across in the third inning. Jen Shaffer (Sr./Waterville, Pa.; Jersey Shore) led Lycoming with three hits and a run-batted-in. Christine Caroselli (So./Newtown, Pa.; Pennsbury) added two hits and scored the Warriors’ lone run. Amanda Gery (Jr./Whitehill, Pa.; Whitehill) suffered the loss on the mound, allowing five hits and three earned runs in four innings. She struck out four batters.

The Monarchs scored five runs on five hits, aided by three Lycoming errors. Mari Valonis scored two runs and also drove in a pair. Sarah Genewski picked up the victory, pitching five-and-a-third innings.

Game two was a pitcher’s duel with both the Warriors’ Morgan Mantle (So./Jersey Shore, Pa.; Jersey Shore) and King’s Nikki Kotula carrying no-hitters into the fifth inning. The Monarchs, however, broke through for a run in the bottom of the frame and added two more in the sixth. Kotula completed the no-hitter, facing just 23 batters in seven innings. Mantle worked all seven innings, as well, giving up the three runs on just three hits while striking out six.

Lycoming will be at home on Saturday, April 17, for another key conference doubleheader versus Drew University.
