WARRIOR
SOFTBALL SWEEPS CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER
WILLIAMSPORT, PA
– The Lycoming College softball team played a Freedom Conference
doubleheader for the first time in more than two weeks, Sunday
afternoon, hosting the University of Scranton. The twinbill was
originally scheduled to be played in Scranton, but field
conditions forced the change in venue. The Warriors took advantage
of playing on their home field with a 5-0 victory in the first
game and a 6-1 win in the nightcap. Lycoming is now 11-7-1 overall
and 3-1 in the conference. The Royals fall to 2-6 and 1-5.
In the opening
game, Jackie Chestnut (Fr./Williamsport, PA; Williamsport)
and Christine Caroselli (Fr./Newtown, PA; Pennsbury) each
collected a pair of hits to pace the Warriors. However, it was a
three-run double by Jess Feerrar (Sr./Lock Haven, PA; Lock
Haven) in the top of the seventh inning that secured the
victory for Lycoming. Amy Curry (So./Fallentimber, PA;
Moshannon Valley) and Jen Shaffer (Jr./Waterville, PA;
Jersey Shore) each drove in a run on one hit, as well.
Morgan Mantle
(Fr./Jersey Shore, PA; Jersey Shore)
recorded the shutout for the Warriors, working seven innings and
allowing just four hits while striking out seven. Mantle lowered
her earned-run-average for the season to a miniscule 0.65.
Jennifer
Miller (Jr./Jersey Shore, PA; Jersey Shore)
was Scranton’s top hitter with a pair of hits in the game. Sarah
Rhodes (Jr./Short Hills, NJ; Milburn) suffered the loss,
giving up eight hits and five runs in seven innings.
In the second
game, Lycoming played long-ball with both Feerrar and Chestnut
hitting solo homeruns in the contest. Katy Kresge
(Jr./Lehighton, PA; Marian Catholic) drove in two runs on two
hits; and Curry and Shaffer each drove in a run as well. Curry was
3-for-3 in the game with two doubles and a triple.
Amanda Gery
(So./Whitehall, PA; Whitehall)
pitched seven innings, allowing four hits and an unearned run, to
pick up her fifth victory of the season. She also struck out five
batters in the game.
Allison
Schmidt (Fr./Scranton, PA; Scranton)
led the Royals’ offense with two hits in two at-bats. Rhodes
again suffered the loss, allowing 12 hits and six runs in seven
innings.
The Warriors are
back in action on Tuesday, April 8, when they host defending
conference champion King’s College. The first pitch is scheduled
for 3 p.m.
