WARRIOR SOFTBALL SWEEPS DELAWARE VALLEY ; SECURES NUMBER TWO SEED FOR CONFERENCE PLAYOFFS

WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The Lycoming College softball team wrapped up the regular season, Sunday afternoon, by hosting Delaware Valley College for a Freedom Conference doubleheader. The Warriors swept the Aggies by scores of 5-1 and 6-0, and clinched the number two seed for the conference tournament. Lycoming completes the regular season with an overall record of 20-10-1 and a mark of 11-3 versus conference opponents. Delaware Valley falls to 6-18 and 0-14.

In the opening game, the Aggies grabbed a one-run lead in the first inning and held the advantage for six-and-a-half innings. The Warriors, however, tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh on a trio of singles by Miranda Newcomer (Jr./Newfoundland, PA; Wallenpaupack), Jackie Chestnut (Fr./Williamsport, PA; Williamsport), and Jen Shaffer (Jr./Waterville, PA; Jersey Shore). A pinch-hit single by Christine Warholic (Jr./Eldersburg, MD; Liberty) then loaded the bases and set the stage for Jana Reitz (Fr./Waynesboro, PA; Waynesboro). Reitz was up to the task hitting a walk-off grand slam to give Lycoming the dramatic victory.

Amanda Gery (So./Whitehall, PA; Whitehall) notched her ninth win of the season. She pitched seven innings, allowing just one run on seven hits.

In the second game, the Warriors took charge right from the start scoring three runs in the first inning. Amy Curry (So./Fallentimber, PA; Moshannon Valley) and Newcomer each hit sacrifice flies to plate the first two runs, and Chestnut drove home the third run with a double. Lycoming added another run in the third inning and two more in the sixth.

Morgan Mantle (Fr./Jersey Shore, PA; Jersey Shore) tossed a two-hit shutout for her ninth victory of the season. She also recorded a career-high 14 strikeouts against 21 batters faced.

The Warriors will begin play in the Freedom Conference playoffs on Friday, May 2. Lycoming will play third-seed King’s College. Drew University is the top seed in the tournament and will face fourth-seed DeSales University in the opening round. The tournament is double-elimination and will run both Friday and Saturday.
